Should medical students consider lifestyle when choosing a specialty?
A medical student recently asked my advice on her decision to pursue a career in dermatology. It was about 25 years ago when my own parents encouraged me to pursue this specialty. What was their deal? Perhaps, they anticipated future developments in the field and were hoping for free Botox treatments? As readers know, I rejected the rarefied world of pustules and itchy skin rashes for the glamor of hemorrhoids, diarrhea and vomit. Continue reading ... Pros and cons of cosmetic surgery
Did you know that fat transfer is the 8th most popular cosmetic surgery procedure? Did you know that Botox or dermal fillers can be administered by anyone, even if they don’t have proper training? (At least in the U.K.) Did you know that botched Botox injections can cause speech and breathing difficulties?  Yikes! Those are just a few of the interesting tidbits I found in this info graphic on cosmetic surgery. Put Your Face Lift on Hold with Laser Treatments
Here is a nice informational video I did recently with the Plastic Surgery Channel on Fractional Skin Resurfacing. Using the Palomar 1540 cosmetic laser, we are treating a lot of patient complaints of wrinkles around the eyes (peri-orbital) and mouth (peri-oral). For deeper, more severe lip lines, we use the ablative 2940 fractional laser. And I sometimes use Botox and Juvederm to enhance results by relaxing and filling the more stubborn wrinkles. Laser technology allows us to treat with non-invasive techniques that have minimal downtime, and noticeable results. Please click to learn more on our fractional page.Considering...

Itching: More Than Skin-Deep - NYTimes.com
The experiment was not for the squirmish. Volunteers were made to itch like crazy on one arm, but not allowed to scratch. Then they were whisked into an M.R.I. scanner to see what parts of their brains lit up when they itched, when researchers scratched them and when they were finally allowed to scratch themselves. The scientific question was this: Why does it feel so good to scratch an itch? "It's quite intriguing to see how many brain centers are activated," said Dr. Gil Yosipovitch, chairman of dermatology at the Temple University School of Medicine and director of the Temple Center for Itch (he conducte...

ELLE Writer Calls IVF a "Scam"
This personal narrative by Ali Margo at ELLE about her experience with the fertility industry will break your heart. She chronicles her two rounds of IVF that end with a call from the clinic telling her that all 20 of her embryos are dead. Read between the lines and you will find greed, exploitation and snake-oil. Margo paints a very unflattering picture of a billion dollar industry that she points out has a 70% failure rate. Here are some excerpts from "$47,000 Dollars Later, I Have No Baby: The IVF Scam":“You think your uterus is why you’re here, but that’s not why you’re here,” the fertility doctor said, ...

New Reference Lab, AION, Specializing in Age Management Diagnostics
Almost eight years ago, I posted a note on the tight link between longevity medicine and lab testing (see: Anti-Aging, Longevity Medicine, and Lab Testing). The two go hand-in-glove. The tests are used, in part, to determine the biologic age of the patient and then various regimens and remedies are used to theoretically slow down the aging process. Here's a paragraph from that note: Just to frame the issue and get your attention, annual revenue from the anti-aging industry is estimated to be $56B  -- this includes products such as anti-aging cream and botox injections. Need to find an anti-aging...

Orphan Drugs - The Seattle Times explains
The mining of rare diseasesThirty years ago, Congress acted to spur research on rare diseases. Today, we have hundreds of new drugs — along with runaway pricing and market manipulation, as drugmakers turn a law with good intentions into a profit engine.By Michael J. Terri R.
I remember meeting Terri for the first time, and it has been wonderful to see her take back control of her health like this. Wishing her continued good health. – Dr. Perlmutter In January 2013 a slight eye tic that I have had for a few years suddenly turned into very hard spasms on the entire left side of my face. Whether I was awake or asleep, they were constant. They were so severe my speech was slurred; I couldn’t drive, read or do much of anything. My life came to a complete halt! I was even dealing with a lot of depression as a result. I just did not feel right. I went to a neurologist in Montgomery and th...
