URO-1 ’s Repris System for Injecting Botox Into Bladder
URO-1, based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, got FDA approval for its Repris Bladder Injection System. The product is designed for delivering Botox injections into the bladder as a treatment option for overactive bladder. The device, which is supposed to make such procedures easier on the physicians and more comfortable on the patients, will be unveiled at the American Urological Association in San Francisco later this month. The Repris relies on a disposable polymer sheath and a shape memory polymer-based cannula that snaps into its previous shape when inside the bladder. This allows easier navigation through the anato...

What Is an ExpertInjector?
Did you know that virtually any physician can purchase and administerinjectables? That ' s more than 1 million doctors who are allowed to perform cosmetic injectables in the U.S. — and less than 3% who have appropriate qualifications. You can rely on theExpertInjector™ designation, the only organization to have the endorsement of the prestigiousAmerican Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery andthe American Society for Dermatological Surgery.Beware of doctors practicing outside of their specialty, offering cosmetic injectables without proper training. This puts you at risk of mediocre or unexpected results, even deformi...

Aging Wisely
This study, published in 2012 in The Journal of the American Medical Association, examined the relationship between attitudes about aging and recovery from disabilities. Researchers found that seniors who have positive outlooks on aging are forty percent more likely to recover from a disability than those with negative attitudes. So how can we feel better about aging? Is it as simple as ignoring the anti-aging ads on television? Maybe not, but it’s a start. Like so many things, it’s all about how we look at it — how we choose to view ourselves and those around us. Surely feeling well can help us look at aging in ...

Acupuncture: A point in the right direction, or a stab in the dark?
Acupuncture is a treatment that dates back to around 100 BC in China. It is based on traditional Chinese concepts such as qi (pronounced “chee” and considered life force energy) and meridians (paths through which qi flows). Multiple studies have failed to demonstrate any scientific evidence supporting such principles. Acupuncture involves the insertion of thin needles into the skin at multiple, varying locations based on the patient’s symptoms. Once inserted, some acupuncturists hand turn the needles for added therapeutic benefit. Although there are many uses for acupuncture in traditional Chinese medicine, in Wester...

Why Bother?
For some reason I have had a similar conversation with different women on the same topic: why take tamoxifen or aromatase inhibitors after initial breast cancer treatment. Aromatase inhibitors are Arimidex (anastrozole), Aromasin (exemestane), and Femara (letrozole)The conversations all boil down to:What if I get side effects? They have heard they are awful and could cause them some real problems. But if you don ' t even try them how will you know if you will experience the side effects? What exactly do they do? They don ' t really understand that they would reduce their recurrence risk by being on themWhy do I have to be o...

Unlocking the lock jaw: Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) dysfunction
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is one of the most heavily utilized and underappreciated joints in the human body. Mechanically, the TMJ is what allows you to open and close your mouth, and to a lesser extent, extend and move your jaw from side to side. Functionally, it facilitates eating, talking, and facial expressions. Without a TMJ, McGruff the crime dog would not be able to “Take a bite out of crime,” and Jaws would have never become a savage predatory superstar of the deep blue sea.  Just kidding. We all know from “Shark Week” that sharks do not actually have a TMJ, but you get the idea. Structurally, the ...

A Weak Admission
A 64-year old woman presented to the emergency department with nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, dry eyes, and difficulty keeping her eyes open. She admitted to eating mandarin oranges out of a can the night before, and at that time she thought they "tasted funny" but did not think much of it.The next morning she noticed she was having trouble opening her eyes and that her mouth was dry. She looked inside the can of oranges and saw it was discolored. Her presenting vital signs were unremarkable. The patient was alert and awake. No reason to smile – Another modern psychology classic has failed to replicate
Image via Quentin Gronau/Flickr showing how participants were instructed to hold the pen By Christian Jarrett The great American psychologist William James proposed that bodily sensations – a thumping heart, a sweaty palm – aren’t merely a consequence of our emotions, but may actually cause them. In his famous example, when you see a bear and your pulse races and you start running, it’s the running and the racing pulse that makes you feel afraid. Consistent with James’ theory (and similar ideas put forward even earlier by Charles Darwin), a lot of research has shown that the expression on our face see...
