Acupuncture Improves Diabetic Gastroparesis
By Diane Fennell "Needleless" acupuncture can provide relief for people dealing with diabetic gastroparesis, according to new research recently presented at the 2013 Digestive Disease Week meeting in Orlando, Florida. As many as 50% of people with diabetes will develop gastroparesis. Gastroparesis, most commonly caused by damage to the nerve fibers that control the movements of the stomach, is a condition in which the stomach's ability to move food into the small intestine is reduced. This slow stomach emptying results in a variety of symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, feelings of fullness after eating, a lack of app...

ProPublica Dollars for Doctors Articles Miss the Mark
Occasionally the media misses the point on important stories.  This is clearly the case with ProPulica’s Dollars for Docs campaign.  By focusing on “payments to physicians,” they continue to miss the mark that a vast majority of those payments will one day lead to improved lives for perhaps millions of patients.   Previously we reported on local and regional news outlets that are using ProPubica’s updated payment data to write articles about physician payments.  Below is a summary to several States that have worked with ProPublica and their Dollars for Docs database to produce such articles.    California...

Doctors' Dubious Excuses for Taking Pharmaceutical Companies' Money
This report, and its recommendations have gotten scant attention, maybe because they would threaten a status quo that enriches conflicted health professionals and the companies that create these conflicts.  However, in my humble opinion, implementing all the report's recommendations would only be a beginning down the road of restoring the integrity of clinical care, teaching, and research.   (Source: Health Care Renewal)

Still So New!
A lot is going on in my life right now, but I don't know if it's really blog-worthy.  I'm not FEELING a lot of anything, just doing a lot of activities and constantly on the go. I don't have much time to stop and think, "how am I feeling?", when before I moved, I had way too much time to think about it.  That may have been part of my problem. The house situation is kind of in limbo at the moment.  We're waiting to see if the home owners will make the necessary repairs that the inspector found - nothing major, but now that we know they're there, of course we want them fixed.  So strange, in Illi...

5 chances to win The Face of Emotion: How Botox Affects Our Moods & Relationships
We have five copies to give away of The Face of Emotion How Botox Affects Our Moods and Relationships by Eric Finzi, kindly donated to the Digest by Palgrave Macmillan. New Scientist called the book "a provocative and insightful contribution" to the debate about emotional regulation. From the publishers: "William Shakespeare famously wrote that 'a face is like a book,' and common wisdom has it that our faces reveal our deep-seated emotions. But what if the reverse were also true? What if our facial expressions set our moods instead of revealing them? What if there were actual science to support the exhortation, ...

A New Unmet Medical Need: Excess Adipose Tissue Syndrome
As reported by FierceBiotech (here), "Bayer Healthcare touted upbeat data from a pair of late-stage studies of an investigational drug [ATX-101, a synthetic version of a human bile component] targeting chin fat, setting the stage for the giant to step into growing aesthetic treatment market. And the results provide a victory from Kythera, which licensed the injected drug to Bayer for markets outside the U.S. and Canada".“An injectable solution for reduction of submental fat is an unmet need in aesthetic medicine," said Patricia S. Walker, M.D., Ph.D., KYTHERA’s Chief Medical Officer."Based on evidence-based experi...
