Maternity surveys 2022
Care Quality Commission -This survey aims to capture what people using maternity services in 2022 felt about the care they received while pregnant, during labour and delivery, and once at home in the weeks following the arrival of their baby. The survey of more than 20,900 women who gave birth in February 2022 shows fewer reporting positively about their experience of maternity care, with a decline in the number able to get help from staff when they needed it, compared to five years ago. However, many respondents were still positive about their interactions with staff.Survey resultsCare Quality Commission - press release (...

Big Dairy Milks Congress for Baby Formula Tariffs
Gabriella Beaumont-SmithJanuary 11th isNational Milk Day and this year, the U.S. dairy industry has a  lot to celebrate. While the 2022 baby formula crisis grappled the United States, the National Milk Producers Federation called on Congress toresistnew action. In November, the groupurged Congress to oppose any efforts to extend the tariff suspensions emergently granted to baby formula imports amidst the crisis. Unsurprisingly, Big Dairy succeeded —on January 1st, thetariffs returned on imports of infant formula meaning these imports are again subject to an effective tax of about 25 percent. To recap, the baby formula cri...

Top 5 Ways to Increase Your Milk Supply
Since we can’t measure breast milk intake the way we can formula, it is easy to be insecure about your milk supply. If you feel your milk supply is low, here are five suggestions on how to increase it: Take care of yourself. Eat well and drink plenty of fluids. During nursing, try not to diet. You are still establishing your supply and need a minimum of 1800 calories each day while you are lactating. Fun fact: if you eat high quality foods and limit fats and sweets, you will usually lose weight more easily than a mother who is formula feeding.  Nurse frequently. A Change Of Heart: " For The Children "
Last night, I archived everything on the blog except " Why Pediatrics " .  More and more, it ' s become a question rather than a statement of purpose.  In the wake of the COVID 19 pandemic, where the entire US system shifted on its axis to shut down community Pediatrics services and " feed " children ' s hospitals (to free up resources for sick adults), the situation for those of us practicing inpatient Pediatrics (as " Pediatric Hospitalists " ) really went to hell.  You could not find/beg a job in the community setting during the pandemic.  Actually, jumping through the ABP ' s hoops to do a...

Solving Healthcare ’s Labor Problem May Mean a Change in Strategy
Discussions about the uncertain future of the industry’s labor force intensified in 2021, as hundreds of thousands of healthcare workers left the field. Analysts and experts once predicted that the full effects of this shortage would be felt by 2030, but it appears that day may now come even sooner. More recent estimates have the U.S. reaching a gap of up to 450,000 nurses alone by 2025 — and that remains true despite the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projection that healthcare will add over 2.5 million jobs in the coming decade, outpacing all other sectors.  To navigate the ongoing healthcare labor shortage, many ...

Wednesday Bible Study: More selective plagiarism
2 Chronicles 1 borrows selectively from 1 Kings 3. Specifically, Solomon ' s vision at Gibeon appears in both. However, in the Book of Kings, before he makes the sacrifice at Gibeon, he " takes " Pharaoh ' s daughter. Then, in Kings, after the vision, we get the story of Solomon proposing to split the baby in half, which was claimed by two " harlots. " Here, instead, we have Solomon gathering up a lot of horses and other expensive stuff. I can only speculate about the reason for these omissions, although as I have said before the Chronicler seems to want to clean up David and Solomon ' s act. Solomon ' s 700 wives and 300 ...

Top 8 Most Controversial Stories About Medical Innovations
I spend my days monitoring progress, analysing new trends, and learning about spectacular new initiatives. Needless to say: not just me, but the whole team of The Medical Futurist is fascinated by what we learn. And then sometimes there is a story that just melts the fuses at one or more team members – and our readers.  Below I picked 8 of our favourite controversial stories from – almost exclusively – this year. It’s important to note that controversial doesn’t equal bad/useless. Sometimes it’s just not widely accepted (yet) and so exotic that they can surely provide a unique talking point at a...

Hush, Here Comes the Not ‐So‐Little Baby Tax
Gabriella Beaumont-SmithThe U.S. baby formula industry is in trouble. For most of 2022, parents faced bare shelves when looking for formula. Even in the last week,34 percent of households reported difficulty finding formula. What ’s more depressing, Reckitt Benckiser, an infant formula producer, expects low supplies topersist into the spring. While reports of problems began in August 2021, alarm bells didn ’t ring until theshutdown of a major U.S. plant in early 2022. The shutdown caused a massive supply shock and by June 2022, national out-of-stock levels of infant formulaexceeded90 percent. The crisis wasn ’t just b...
