Parenting Instagram accounts can make mothers feel supported, but also less competent
By Emily Reynolds Adjusting to parenting can be difficult for many new parents — particularly when it comes to judging their own competence or knowing whether or not they are doing the “right” thing. Subsequently, many new parents seek advice: from peers, family members, friends, and, increasingly, from social media. A new study, published in Acta Psychologica, explores the impact of parenting-related Instagram accounts on mothers. It finds a mixed experience: while mothers can feel supported by a community of fellow parents, they can also feel less competent when comparing themselves to others. ...

Impact of Covid-19 on fertility treatment 2020
This report looks at changes in UK fertility treatment during the Covid-19 pandemic, including treatment numbers, funding, and donation. The report reveals that NHS-funded IVF treatments fell by seven per cent across the UK (35 per cent, 2019 to 28 per cent, 2020), with almost 26,000 patients over 35 receiving IVF treatments; a group prioritised by clinics as the chance of having a baby following fertility treatment decreases with age. The HFEA say this latest data confirms that fewer patients experienced delays during the pandemic than initially feared. This actually shows, a very small drop in treatments given the far-re...

Medicine and motherhood: on call forever
My residency baby just turned eighteen. Obviously, he isn ’t really a baby anymore. He is six foot four and going to college, but somehow, I still think of him as that little baby. Maybe I’m just relieved that “we” both made it to eighteen. By “we,” I mean “me” as a physician mom and “him”Read more …Medicine and motherhood: on call forever originally appeared inKevinMD.com. Rock ‐a‐Bye Trade Restrictions on Baby Formula
Gabriella Beaumont-SmithOver the last few months, a  U.S. baby formula producer issued recallsbothvoluntarily and required by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). These recalls arerocking the U.S. baby formula market leaving parents facing higher prices andbare shelves. Stores like Walgreens,CVS Health, andTarget are limiting the number of formula products per purchase because of low inventory —just last month, national out‐of‐stock levels reached40 percent! One reason retailers are struggling to recover stock levels is the multifarious trade restrictions that limit infant formula imports. The A word once again
I ' ve written about  abortion here before, and now I ' m pretty much just going to repeat myself, but it ' s time to do so.Point one -- and this is important -- conservative evangelicals had absolutely no problem with abortion until the mid-1970s.Historian Randall Balmer tells the story here, and it is absolutely incontrovertible, as this excerpt makes clear:Both before and for several years afterRoe, evangelicals were overwhelmingly indifferent to the subject, which they considered a “Catholic issue.” In 1968, for instance, a symposium sponsored by the Christian Medical Society andChristianity Today, the flagshi...

How The PBM Insulin Scheme Is Poised to Be Disrupted by Civica Rx
So, with this week ' s news focused on other areas (like the Supreme Court), I thought it might be appropriate to focus on something which is still very broken, yet seems poised to be resolved by good old fashioned market forces: insulin prices. The U.S. " market " for insulin is bedeviled by the same problem that causes all U.S. prescription drug prices to be so high: Pharmacy Benefit Managers ( " PBM ' s " ) are manipulating prescription drug discounting behind-the-scenes in order to enrich themselves at everyone else ' s expense. A physician ’s personal great resignation [PODCAST]
“Before retirement, I switched everything I cared about to my personal one and unsubscribed to everything I didn ’t care about. For the first few months, I religiously checked my work email. Sunday Sermonette: The wages of sin are delayed
Ch. 14 tells essentially parallel stories about Jeroboam in Israel and Rehoboam in Judah. Both kingdoms start putting up shrines to other Gods Yahweh gets mad. However, in the case of Jeroboam his vengeance is for some reason delayed. He kills one of Jeroboam ' s babies but another son does succeed Jeroboam, and the kingdom otherwise goes along just fine for the time being. (Yahweh will get around to clobbering them later.) As for Rehoboam and Judah, the consequences aren ' t really all that bad. Pharaoh comes and takes some treasures, and Rehoboam has to replace Solomon ' s gold shields with bronze ones, but that ' s abou...
