Understanding The SAMPLE History
The SAMPLE history usually comes up in the first few weeks of EMT class. It’s such a widely accepted standard that it appears in the National Registry medical and trauma skills station as well as the EMT National Standard Curriculum. As far as subjective patient history’s go…SAMPLE is the gold standard. Like anything else in medicine, widespread utilization also comes with widespread misunderstanding. The SAMPLE history is an educational gold standard for a reason. Advancing American Indian and Alaska Native Health Through Research, Training, and Engagement
American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) populations have long experienced health disparities such as higher rates of diabetes, certain cancers, and mental health conditions than those of other Americans. One contributing factor in these disparities is underrepresentation of AI/AN populations in biomedical science—as study participants, researchers, and health professionals. Unfamiliarity with health care options and opportunities, coupled with a distrust of biomedical research resulting from unethical studies in the past, have exacerbated this underrepresentation. NIGMS-supported researchers, including Native scient...

Doctors Love Alerts Until They Don ’ t
You can imagine the EHR Product Manager that had the great idea to alert physicians to a drug to drug interaction or an allergy issue.  It seems obvious that an alert like this is going to help doctors provide better care to their patients.  Who wouldn’t want a notification that something they were doing had a potential issue, right? What is carbon dioxide angiography? Cardiology Basics
Carbon dioxide angiography is done using carbon dioxide injection into the blood vessel. Usually iodine containing radiocontrast dyes  are injected into the blood vessels and continuous X-ray imaging done, to obtain angiograms. Contrast material is needed to visualize the blood vessel separately from the other body tissue. But usual iodinated radiocontrast dyes have a potential risk of causing acute kidney injury. This is more so in those with already impaired renal function. It is in this situation that carbon dioxide angiography is usually considered. Usual angiograms appear dark while carbon dioxide angiogram look...
