Friday Feature: Hillsdale College K –12 Initiatives
Colleen HroncichWhen we first started homeschooling, one of the most amazing resources I found was a K –12 curriculum guide from Hillsdale Academy, a private classical Christian school owned and operated byHillsdale College. It provided book lists for each subject along with a detailed weekly plan to help you map out the year. It was designed for K –12 schools, but it was a helpful guide as we took our baby steps in homeschooling. And it was free, which was an added blessing. Little did I know at the time that Hillsdale would eventually become a leader in both public and privateK –1...

More Cold Water Thrown on Some Alarmist Election Claims
This article is the first to tackle this important question. We examine all states’ district plans before and after th e 2020 round of redistricting at the congressional, state senate, and state house levels. Our primary finding is that there was little retrogression in formerly covered states. In sum, the number of minority ability districts in these states actually rose slightly. We also show that formerly covered states were largely indistinguishable from formerly uncovered states in terms of retrogression. If anything, states unaffected by Shelby County retrogressed marginally more than did states impacted by the rul...

Friday Feature: Soar Academy
Colleen HroncichIf you ’re designing a school for kids who have been left behind, you ’re going to need flexibility, an individualized approach, and a willingness to go at different paces. That ’s exactly what Kenisha Skaggs has created with Soar Academy in Augusta, Georgia.Kenisha worked at a tutoring center, but the methods they used weren ’t working. In 2010, she began tutoring students in her home after school. Parents liked the customized multi‐sensory approach she used—which she mainly learned from her mom homeschooling her in high school. Some parents asked her to homeschool their child...

No Shortage of Options for Reforming the Jones Act
ConclusionThese proposals are just a sampling of the many possible reforms that could be undertaken to reduce the Jones Act ’s burden and make it better reflect 21st-century maritime realities. There is plentiful room for creative thinking and one can readily imagine even more possibilities, such as Jones Act exemptions linked to certain environmental goals (for example, exempting the offshore wind industry or the tran sportation of machinery and equipment designed to assist Puerto Rico’stransition to renewable energy) or reciprocal market access by U.S. trading partners (who have longindicatedtheirdesire for Jones Act...

Lucia Savage Discusses Highlights of the Upcoming Health Datapalooza
The Health Datapalooza conference is a unique annual event. As the playful name suggests, it’s a somewhat countercultural happening, a place for freewheeling and respectfully critical discussion among health data experts. The conference was launched in 2010 by Todd Park, a ground-breaking technologist who was CTO of HHS at the time and was later promoted to be CTO of the United States. Lucia Savage, Chair of the AcademyHealth Committee on Advocacy and Public Policy and Chief Privacy and Regulatory Officer at Omada Health, explains how, in contrast to most health care conferences, the Datapalooza is “not glitzy&...

Jeffrey A. SingerAlmost every week, reports appear in the local news describing how police officers, exposed to fentanyl in the air or by contact, lose consciousness and need reviving with the opioid overdose antidote naloxone. Their coworkers take them to a nearby emergency room, where they are evaluated and released. This unscientific hysteria reached a new level when police near Wilmington, North Carolina, addedassault charges to a suspect they arrested and charged with possessing and trafficking heroin, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia. Police added the assault charges because the suspect tossed the drugs...
