EM Docs can learn from the NFL Players Association
Thomas Cook, MD titled his most recent EM News column, “Why Do EPs Feel Powerless?” The answer: most emergency physicians feel powerless because most EPs are professionally powerless. The American Academy of Emergency Medicine (AAEM) has been battling non-physician ownership of EM practices since 1993. In that time, physician... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Surgical Videos for Visual Learners
For visual learners, do you have any specific individual, website or resource you would suggest that could provide surgical videos ? I realize books have been mentioned but it’s helpful to have videos specifically made for surgical techniques. Obviously YouTube is a great resource but I’m looking for additional suggestions. Please see link below as an example. All and any links would be greatly appreciated. Foot and Ankle Surgery Academy (Source: Student Doctor Network)

HPSP Fit and Branch Specific Qs
Hi! I’m currently a sophomore in undergrad. I was hoping to get some advice about HPSP. Background Info: I’m from a military family (dad is an Annapolis grad and is still in after 20+ years) and have always had a desire to serve. I even applied and was accepted to USNA and West Point, but I knew that I wanted to be a doctor and didn’t want to risk not service selecting into MedCorps, so I decided to go to my top choice civilian school over a service academy. I thought I could satisfy my... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

I was unschooled, should I mention it on applications?
I have had a unique educational journey and I'm not sure if I should write about it in my med school applications. I am curious to know what SDN users think. I was pulled out of school after the 1st grade due to poverty and my mom’s untreated mental illness. I wasn’t homeschooled and I didn’t have access to any learning resources. I later used khan academy to learn math, starting with 2nd grade material when I was 18. Overall, after 1st grade I had no more formal education until I started... Medical "clearance" for high intensity activities when working fast track or urgent care
Hello, when working fast track or urgent care, people come in with medical "clearance" pre-employment forms which state that the doctor says they are qualified to do high intensity activities such as run two miles, swim 500 meters, etc. Sometimes, it's the person who wants to enter the police academy, or it may be somebody who wants to do an endurance sporting event. This is an activity level far beyond the person who just needs a basic exam so they can go be a teacher or enroll in pharmacy... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
