How early intervention can transform a child ’ s speech development
The American Academy of Pediatrics’ recent decision to move away from the “wait and see” philosophy to a more proactive intervention when dealing with childhood obesity got me reflecting on how “wait and see” is still used in many other aspects of children’s development. As a speech therapist and a mother of a child who Read more… How early intervention can transform a child’s speech development originally appeared in KevinMD.com. A Study Reveals The Impact Of Childhood TV Habits On Adult Blood Pressure
Conclusion In sum, monitoring and managing screen time is not just about today’s habits but a long-term investment in a child’s future health, particularly their blood pressure levels. The data linking childhood TV viewing to adult health problems like high blood pressure underscores the urgency of this matter. However, understanding is just the first step. From here, we must translate this knowledge into action – through parental control, societal initiatives, healthier dietary habits, and increased physical activity. But we must also remember that screen time isn’t all bad – the conten...

Mindlessness
Academy Health is the rather oddly named society for health services researchers. They sent me a press release which I excerpt: Today, the House Appropriations Committee released a breathtakingly reckless bill that decimates federal research, science, and medicine programs, and puts the health of all Americans at risk. It is so extreme that many pundits presume it has zero chance of becoming law, but that very extremism requires that we respond quickly and unequivocally.   . . .  " This bill would eliminate the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) in its entirety. AHRQ supports r...

I live in eastern Connecticut, not far from the Coast Guard Academy. For those who don ' t know it ' s in New London, actually across the street from Connecticut College, which my cousin attended and a friend of mind taught at, so I ' ve been in the area a few times. The Mystic Seaport museum is another of those important symbols -- home, among other rare artifacts, to the only surviving wooden whaling ship, the Charles W. Morgan. ...

In An Ironic Twist, the AMA Seeks Alternatives to the Residency Matching Program
Jeffrey A. SingerLast weekend the American Medical Association House of Delegates passed a  resolution tacitly claiming that the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) is likely anti ‐competitive and a violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890. The resolution concluded:RESOLVED, That our American Medical Association study alternatives to the current residency and fellowship Match process which would be less restrictive on free market competition for applicants. (Directive to Take Action)This is quite surprising, given that the AMA was a  co‐defendant, along with the Association of American Medical Col...

The Empathy-First Approach: Choosing Technology that Benefits All Healthcare Stakeholders
The following is a guest article by Jon Zimmerman, CEO at Holon Solutions In today’s healthcare landscape, clinical information systems are valuable tools for coordinating care and improving outcomes. However, as healthcare workers have discovered time and time again, these technologies are not always optimally user-friendly, nor are they built for today’s complex world. Fundamentally, most of these different systems just don’t work well together.  When providers struggle to use their existing technologies while having to incorporate information from disconnected systems, it stands to reason that patients and payers...
