Continued Declining Prevalence of Screening Detected Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms in 65 Year Old Swedish Men
Randomised trials conducted in the 1990s convincingly demonstrated the effectiveness of ultrasound screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) in men.1 This formed the basis for the introduction of population screening targeting AAA among 65 year old men in Sweden in 2006 and the UK in 2008, and other countries subsequently followed. In the Swedish screening programme, a total prevalence of 2.2% (1.7% screening detected and 0.5% already known AAAs) was initially reported,2 significantly lower than the 4 – 7% previously found in trials. Neutrophil Extracellular Traps in Cardiovascular and Aortic Disease: A Narrative Review on Molecular Mechanisms and Therapeutic Targeting
Int J Mol Sci. 2024 Apr 3;25(7):3983. doi: 10.3390/ijms25073983.ABSTRACTNeutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), composed of DNA, histones, and antimicrobial proteins, are released by neutrophils in response to pathogens but are also recognized for their involvement in a range of pathological processes, including autoimmune diseases, cancer, and cardiovascular diseases. This review explores the intricate roles of NETs in different cardiovascular conditions such as thrombosis, atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, COVID-19, and particularly in the pathogenesis of abdominal aortic aneurysms. We elucidate the mechanisms under...

Abdominal aortic aneurysm: epidemiology, screening, and work-up for repair
Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a dilatation greater than 3  cm of the abdominal aorta inferior to the aortic hiatus. In the UK, population screening for AAA is offered to men in the year of their 65th birthday. Men with small AAAs (3.0–5.4 cm) are entered into an ultrasound surveillance program and have their cardiovascular risk factors managed aggress ively. An aortic aneurysm that is either symptomatic or has a diameter ≥5.5 cm should be considered for repair to prevent rupture. Repair can be undertaken using either an open surgical or endovascular approach; the decision when to repair an AAA, an by what meth...

Can HALP score predict post-contrast acute kidney injury and 6-year mortality in patients undergoing endovascular abdominal aneurysm repair?
CONCLUSIONS: The HALP score, which can be calculated with a simple formula, can be used to predict PC-AKI and medium-long-term mortality in EVAR patients.PMID:38607832 | DOI:10.1177/17085381241246905 (Source: Vascular)

Mid-term results of "off-label" use of the Endurant stentgraft in patients with infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysms
CONCLUSION: In this study, real-life experience with the Endurant II and IIS stentgraft is described. Non-adherence with instructions for use was associated with a higher risk of endoleak type IA (p = .06). In the early postoperative period, there were more patients with limb occlusion; this finding was not observed anymore at the end of the follow-up period.PMID:38606774 | DOI:10.1177/17085381241247265 (Source: Vascular)

Resolvin D2 prevents vascular remodeling, hypercontractility and endothelial dysfunction in obese hypertensive mice through modulation of vascular and proinflammatory factors
Biomed Pharmacother. 2024 Apr 11;174:116564. doi: 10.1016/j.biopha.2024.116564. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDuring resolution of inflammation, specialized proresolving mediators (SPMs), including resolvins, are produced to restore tissue homeostasis. We hypothesized that there might be a dysregulation of SPMs pathways in pathological vascular remodeling and that resolvin D2 (RvD2) might prevent vascular remodeling and contractile and endothelial dysfunction in a model of obesity and hypertension. In aortic samples of patients with or without abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA), we evaluated gene expression of enzymes involv...
