We report a subset of patients who clinically have typical neurogenic OH but who paradoxically have elevated upright levels of plasma norepinephrine. We retrospectively studied 83 OH patients evaluated at the Vanderbilt Autonomic Dysfunction Center between August 2007 and May 2013. Based upon standing norepinephrine, patients were dichotomized into a hyperadrenergic orthostatic hypotension group (hyperOH: upright NE ≥3.55 nmol/L [600 pg/mL], n=19) or a non-hyperadrenergic orthostatic hypotension group (nOH: upright NE

This study was designed to assess the cardioprotective effects of acute physical stress against ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury through the activation of the sympathetic nervous system. Methods: Thirty-two male Wistar rats were divided into four groups; (1) IR (n = 8): rats underwent I/R, (2) Acute stress (St+IR) (n = 8): physical stress induced 1-hour before I/R, (3) Sympathectomy (Symp+IR) (n = 8): chemical sympathectomy was done 24-hours before I/R and (4) Sympathectomy- physical stress (Symp+St+IR) (n = 8): chemical sympathectomy induced before physical stress and I/R. Chemical sympathectomy was performed using 6-hyd...

CONCLUSIONS: Immediate reflex HPV 16/18/45 genotyping of mRNA HPV-positive, cytology-negative patients led to early colposcopic referral and histopathologic diagnoses of three difficult-to-detect, low-stage, cervical adenocarcinomas and significantly increased overall early detection of CIN2+ lesions. BDNF Downregulates Adrenergic β-Receptor-Mediated Hypotensive Mechanisms in the Paraventricular Nucleus of the Hypothalamus. Am J Physiol Heart Circ Physiol. 2019 Oct 11;: Authors: Thorsdottir D, Cruickshank NC, Einwag Z, Hennig GW, Erdos B Abstract Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is upregulated in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVN) in response to hypertensive stimuli such as stress and hyperosmolality, and BDNF, acting in the PVN plays a key role in elevating sympathetic activity and blood pressure. However, downstream mechanisms mediating these effects remain unclear...

Introduction: Recent evidence demonstrates that women with myotonic dystrophy type 1 are at increased risk of reproductive organ tumors. However, studies of reproductive cancer risk factors in those patients are lacking. Methods: Using questionnaires, we collected and analyzed personal history information related to cancer risk factors from women enrolled in a UK and US registry for myotonic dystrophy (dystrophia myotonica; DM) patients. Results: The survey was completed by 242 DM type 1 (DM1) and 44 DM type 2 (DM2) women enrolled in the UK Registry (N = 124) and the US National Registry (N = 162). The mean age at DM1 diagno...

Publication date: 9 October 2019Source: Neuron, Volume 104, Issue 1Author(s): Bernard W. BalleineThe ability to establish behaviorally what psychological capacity an animal is deploying—to discern accurately what an animal is doing—is key to functional analyses of the brain. Our current understanding of these capacities suggests, however, that this task is complex; there is evidence that multiple capacities are engaged simultaneously and contribute independently to the control of behavior. As such, establishing the contribution of a cell, circuit, or neural system to any one function requires careful dissection...

CONCLUSIONS: 'Sirim' pain, similar to cold pain, should be considered a major neuropathic pain in SFN. Among pain characteristics, stabbing pain of a spontaneous paroxysmal nature may be more pronounced in the setting of dysfunctional Aδ fibers with functional autonomic C fibers. Abstract PURPOSE: Recession of levator muscle can potentially decrease the severity of corneal exposure by reducing margin-reflex distance 1. The purpose of this study is evaluation of effects of levator recession on lagophthalmos in facial palsy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a non-comparative case series of consecutive patients with exposure keratopathy due to facial paralysis between 2012 and 2017, levator recession was performed through lid crease incision. Small-size (⩽3 mm) lateral tarsorrhaphy was performed on a case-by-case basis for those with moderate-to-severe keratopathy. Preoperative and postoperat...
