Diabetes mellitus: 100 years since the discovery of insulin
The year 2021 marks the 100th anniversary of the discovery of insulin, which radically changed our understanding of the physiology, and most importantly the diagnosis and treatment of diabetes mellitus. The discovery of insulin was a true milestone for medicine. Before the discovery of insulin, diabetes was associated with severe morbidity, and early mortality, the latter being more pronounced in type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). Patients were advised to follow very low calorie diets with minimal carbohydrates, which were difficult to sustain in the long-term and thus starvation was added to the other factors contributing to the low quality of life after the diagnosis of diabetes.
