Positive association of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol with lumbar and femoral neck bone mineral density in postmenopausal women

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and musculoskeletal disorders, including osteoporosis, are responsible for a considerable proportion of the morbidity and mortality burden associated with ageing [1]. Epidemiological and clinical studies have found a relationship between them [2,3], which is further supported by shared risk factors such as sedentariness, smoking and in women, hypoestrogenism [4 –6]. Moreover, both diseases share an inflammatory mechanism in their respective pathogeneses [7–10]. Attention has also centered the potential involvement of lipids, which play a critical role in the development of atherosclerosis, the inflammatory condition underlying CVD.
