Researchers awarded $2 million grant to study the immune system and triple negative breast cancer

(University of Tennessee Health Science Center) Liza Makowski, Ph.D., a professor in the Department of Medicine-Hematology-Oncology at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, and Joseph F. Pierre, PhD, an assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics-Obesity at UTHSC, have received $2.1 million from the National Cancer Institute for a five-year study to examine how the microbiome impacts the immune system and response to immunotherapy for an aggressive type of breast cancer called triple negative breast cancer.
