Serum nesfatin-1, ghrelin, and lipid levels in adolescents with first episode drug na ïve unipolar depression.

This study aimed to evaluate serum nesfatin-1, ghrelin, and lipid levels as biological markers of adolescent MDD and their relationship with the severity of depression-anxiety and suicide risk in MDD. Methods:This study included 37 drug naïve adolescents between the ages of 12 and 18 who were diagnosed with a first episode MDD according to the Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children-Present and Lifetime Version (K-SADS-PL) and DSM-V diagnostic criteria. Thirty-three healthy adolescents between the ages of 12 and 18 were included as the control group. The Children's Depression Inventory (CDI), Screen for Child Anxiety Related Disorders (SCARED), and Suicide Probability Scale (SPS) were used to evaluate the subjects in the MDD and control groups. In the first stage, serum nesfatin-1, ghrelin, and lipid levels were compared between the adolescents diagnosed with MDD and the control group. Next, the correlations between these levels and the CDI, SCARED, and SPS scores were evaluated. Results: Nesfatin-1 levels were significantly lower in the MDD group than the control group (p

Conclusion: This study shows an inverse relationship between serum 25(OH) D level and the severity of CAD. Our data show that vitamin D plays an important role in preventing CAD. These findings could help design prospective studies and clinical trials on a wider scale to investigate the effects of vitamin D interventions in preventing the development of CAD.

Conclusions We estimate a high prevalence of GAD in this population. Associations were found between GAD and health self-perceived as regular, cohabitation with four or more peopl e, history of falls and more than one hospitalization in the last year. Vincent van Gogh was one of the most influential artists of the Western world, having shaped the post-impressionist art movement by shifting its boundaries forward into abstract expressionism. His distinctive style, which was not valued by the art-buying public during his lifetime, is nowadays one of the most sought after. However, despite the great deal of attention from academic and artistic circles, one important question remains open: was van Gogh’s original style a visual manifestation distinct from his troubled mind, or was it in fact a by-product of an impairment that resulted from the psychiatric illness that...

Authors: Theodoropoulou S, Gialouris AG Abstract Brain is an organ with the highest lipid concentration in the body. Cellular membrane lipids can affect both the positioning and the functioning of membrane proteins, thus regulating several cell actions. Changes in the lipid composition of cell membrane can modulate the microenvironment and consequently the function of its proteins, e.g. neurotransmission. Some of the first studies on the subject have shown a negative correlation between serum cholesterol levels and depression, suicidality and behavioral disorders. Several studies -but not all- have found decreased ...
