Differences in the Transcriptomic Response of Campylobacter coli and Campylobacter lari to Heat Stress

In this study, the stress response of Campylobacter coli and Campylobacter lari to elevated temperatures (46°C) was investigated by survival assays and whole transcriptome analysis. None of the strains survived at 46°C for more than 8 h and approximately 20% of the genes of C. coli RM2228 and C. lari RM2100 were differentially expressed. The transcriptomic profiles showed enhanced gene expression of several chaperones like dnaK, groES, groEL, and clpB in both strains, indicating a general involvement in the heat stress response within the Campylobacter species. However, the pronounced differences in the expression pattern between C. coli and C. lari suggest that stress response mechanisms described for one Campylobacter species might be not necessarily transferable to other Campylobacter species.

Once a dangerous new pathogen is out, as we are seeing, it can be difficult if not impossible to prevent it going global. One as contagious as SARS-CoV-2 has the potential to infect the whole of humanity. Eighty per cent of cases may be benign, but with such a large pool of susceptible hosts, the numbers who experience severe illness and die can still be shockingly high. ConclusionsThese results suggest that landscape features may have important influences onCampylobacter species exposure and transmission dynamics in wildlife. In particular, data suggest that human-modified landscapes may increase C.jejuni infection, a primarily human pathogen, in banded mongooses. Pathogen circulation and transmission in urbanizing wildlife reservoirs may increase human vulnerability to infection, findings that may have critical implications for both public and animal health in regions where people live in close proximity to wildlife.

In conclusion, Campylobacter jejuni infection and the consequent subepithelial immune activation cause intestinal barrier dysfunction mainly through caspase-3-dependent epithelial apoptosis. Conclusion: We could demonstrate differences in the ability to survive at elevated temperatures for C. jejuni, C. coli and C. lari and showed for the first time transcriptomic analyses of the heat stress response of C. coli and C. lari. Our data suggest that the heat stress response of C. coli and C. lari are more similar to each other compared to C. jejuni, even though on genetic level a higher homology exists between C. jejuni and C. coli. This indicates that stress response mechanisms described for C. jejun i might be unique for this species and not necessarily transferable to other Campylobacter species.
