DEX Marks the Spot: Finding the Optimal Sedation Regimen for Pediatric Patients Undergoing Sedated Transthoracic Echocardiography

In this issue of the Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia, Sun et al. present a commendable prospective, randomized controlled trial comparing intranasal dexmedetomidine (DEX) and a combination of intranasal DEX and ketamine (DEX-KET) in pediatric subjects with congenital heart disease (CHD) presenting for elective transthoracic echocardiography (TTE).1 This an important study because congenital heart defects are the most common form of birth defect, affecting nearly 1% of all live births in the United States.
