Changes in kidney function among men having sex with men starting on demand tenofovir disoproxil fumarate - emtricitabine for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis. J Int AIDS Soc. 2020 Feb;23(2):e25420 Authors: Liegeon G, Antoni G, Pialoux G, Capitant C, Cotte L, Charreau I, Tremblay C, Cua E, Senneville E, Raffi F, Meyer L, Molina JM, ANRS-IPERGAY study group Abstract INTRODUCTION: Daily pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) with tenofovir disoproxil fumarate/emtricitabine (TDF/FTC) is associated with a small but statistically significant decrease in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). We assessed the renal safety of on-demand PrEP with TDF/FTC in HIV-1 uninfected men. METHODS: We used data from the randomized double-blind placebo-controlled ANRS-IPERGAY trial and its open-label extension conducted between February 2012 and June 2016 among HIV-uninfected MSM starting on-demand PrEP. Using linear mixed model, we evaluated the mean eGFR decline from baseline over time and determined risks factors associated with eGFR decline during the study. RESULTS: During the blind phase, with a median follow-up of 9.4 months, the mean decline slope of eGFR from baseline was -0.88 and -1.53 mL/min/1.73 m2 per year in the placebo (n = 201) and the TDF/FTC group (n = 198) respectively, with a slope difference of 0.65 mL/min/1.73 m2 per year (p = 0.27). Including both phases, 389 participants started on-demand TDF/F...

Purpose of review The universal adoption of electronic health records, improvement in technology, and the availability of continuous monitoring has generated large quantities of healthcare data. Machine learning is increasingly adopted by nephrology researchers to analyze this data in order to improve the care of their patients. Recent findings In this review, we provide a broad overview of the different types of machine learning algorithms currently available and how researchers have applied these methods in nephrology research. Current applications have included prediction of acute kidney injury and chronic kidney d...

By Webster MavhuHARARE, Mar 5 2020 (IPS) Women are the face of HIV in Africa, yet four of every 10 persons living with HIV in East and Southern Africa are men. Despite higher rates of HIV infection among women, more men living with HIV are dying. Men are often left behind by programs that aim to reduce HIV rates as well as those providing HIV treatment. Global HIV targets are that by December 2020, 90% of all people living with HIV will know their status, 90% of those HIV positive are on treatment and, 90% of those on treatment have reduced replication of the virus in their body. Some African countries are on track to achi...

Abstract INTRODUCTION: The prevalence and burden of age-related non-AIDS comorbidities (NACM) is poorly characterized among women living with HIV (WLWH). METHODS: Virologically-suppressed WLWH and HIV-seronegative participants followed in the Women's Interagency HIV Study (WIHS) through ≥2009 (when>80% WLWH used antiretroviral therapy) were included, with outcomes measured through 3/31/2018. Covariates, NACM number and prevalence were summarized at most recent WIHS visit. We used linear regression models to determine NACM burden by HIV serostatus and age. RESULTS: Among 3232 women (2309 WLWH, 923 H...

Conclusions: PLWH with mood disorders were at increased risk of incident NCDs and multimorbidity, particularly metabolic syndrome. Focused prevention and treatment of NCDs may reduce the burden of multimorbidity in this high-risk group.

Conclusions: The results demonstrate that combination of the prevention of modifiable risk factors with considerable changes in lifestyle are determining factors for success in the therapeutic of PLWH. High levels of motivation are essential for behavioral changes, and nurses are ideally position to provide safe care with nonpharmacological strategies for CVD risk reduction.

In this study, we investigated the relationship using viremia copy-years (VCY), a cumulative measure of HIV plasma viral burden. METHODS: Data were analyzed for 686 PLWH in the Florida Cohort Study who had at least five years of VL data before the baseline. VL data were extracted from Enhanced HIV/AIDS Reporting System (eHARS) and used to define peak VL (pVL), recent VL (rVL), and undetectable VL (uVL: rVL

AbstractNeighborhoods with high poverty rates have limited resources to support residents ’ health. Using census data, we calculated the proportion of each Women’s Interagency HIV Study participant’s census tract (neighborhood) living below the poverty line. We assessed associations between neighborhood poverty and (1) unsuppressed viral load [VL] in HIV-seropositive women, (2) unc ontrolled blood pressure among HIV-seropositive and HIV-seronegative hypertensive women, and (3) uncontrolled diabetes among HIV-seropositive and HIV-seronegative diabetic women using modified Poisson regression models. Neighbo...

Specific PIs are also effective tools for inactivating proteases involved in human diseases like arthritis, pancreatitis, hepatitis, cancer, AIDS, thrombosis, emphysema, hypertension, and muscular dystrophy among others.
