The modern plague of antivaccine extremists

In 2019, the World Health Organization declared vaccine hesitancy a top threat to global health,1 and the United States experienced the largest number of measles infections since 1992, almost losing measles elimination status. Vaccine disinformation flourishes on social media, where misleading click-bait conspiracies go viral and families, physicians, and public health advocates are bullied and threatened to silence support for vaccination. As a result, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that rates of young children not receiving certain vaccinations continue to increase, with states reporting rates as high as 7.7% of kindergarteners granted vaccination exemptions.
