Oxytocin modulates intrinsic neural activity in patients with chronic low back pain

ConclusionsThese data suggest OXT ‐related modulation of regional activity and neural network strength in patients with cLBP and healthy controls. In patients, distinct regions of the pain matrix may be responsive to modulation by OXT.

Authors: Mazza E, Marcia S, Mondaini F, Piras E, Giordan N, Torri T, Barbanti-Bròdano G, Parodi F Abstract OBJECTIVE: In this premarket clinical study, we evaluated the efficacy and safety of a novel Hydrogel (HYADD4-G) for reducing low back pain (LBP) in patients with degenerative disc disease (DDD). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-three patients with chronic LBP were enrolled. All patients presented with up to three lumbar black discs (Pfirrmann grade III or IV), LBP of at least 40 mm on the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), and a Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMDQ) score of at least 9. Patients rece...

En reiseglad 80-åring med ryggsmerter og vekttap. Tidsskr Nor Laegeforen. 2019 Sep 10;139(12): Authors: Leknesund SH, Finjord T, Jordal S Abstract BACKGROUND: This case report presents one of the first documented incidents of chronic Q-fever (C. burnetii) in Norway. A comprehensive workup resulted in an unexpected finding. CASE PRESENTATION: A Norwegian woman in her eighties presented to a district general hospital with lower back pain, decreased general condition and weight loss. Computer tomography (CT) revealed a large thoracic aortic aneurysm presumed to be of mycotic origin, and later ...

Accumulating evidence has shown that complicated brain systems are involved in the development and maintenance of chronic low back pain (cLBP), but the association between brain functional changes and clinical outcomes remains unclear. Here, we used resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and multivariate pattern analysis to identify abnormal functional connectivity (FC) between the default mode, sensorimotor, salience, and central executive brain networks in cLBP and tested whether abnormal FCs are related to pain and comorbid symptoms. Fifty cLBP patients and 44 matched healthy controls (HCs) underwent...

The objectives of this study were to define the role for surgery in the treatment of chronic low back pain (cLBP) and to develop a new classification of cLBP based on the pattern of injury.HypothesisSurgery may benefit patients with cLBP, and a new classification based on the injury pattern may be of interest.MethodA systematic literature review was performed by searching Medline, the Cochrane Library, the French public health database (Banque de Données en Santé Publique), Science Direct, and the National Guideline Clearinghouse. The main search terms were “back pain” OR “lumbar” OR &...

Publication date: Available online 14 January 2019Source: NeuroImage: ClinicalAuthor(s): Fuqing Zhou, Lin Wu, Linghong Guo, Yong Zhang, Xianjun ZengAbstractIncreasing evidence has suggested that central plasticity plays a crucial role in the development and maintenance of (chronic) nonspecific low back pain. However, it is unclear how local or short-distance functional interactions contribute to persisting low back-related leg pain (LBLP) due to a specific condition (i.e., lumbar disc herniation). In particular, the multiscale nature of local connectivity properties in various brain regions is still unclear. Here, we used ...

If you are one of the more than 100 million Americans suffering with chronic pain, you know how desperate you can get searching for relief. For constant or chronic pain, sometimes knowing that you can only get temporary relief from medications sits at the back of your brain and sets up pain anticipation. Shouldn’t there be a better way, an approach or approaches that don’t rely on pharmaceutical drugs to combat pain? According to new research, there are some new pain relief methods that look very promising to do just that. Treatment from Strangers Mat Provide Unexpected Pain Relief It may seem counter-intuitiv...

ConclusionSclerosis can occur in endplates with any type of MCs. However, the clinical and animal study suggests that sclerosis is greatest in endplates showing type III MCs.The translational potential of this articleThe study showed that sclerosis can occur in endplates with MCs type I, II and III. In patients with endplate sclerosis on plain radiographs or CT scans, the endplate can still represent an inflammatory process associated with chronic lower back pain.

In this study, we analyzed FGF21 levels and alterations in the expression of genes encoding components of the FGF21-responsive molecular machinery in adipose tissue from aged individuals so as to ascertain whether altered FGF21 responsiveness that develops with aging jeopardizes human health and/or accelerates metabolic disturbances associated with aging. We studied a cohort of 28 healthy elderly individuals (≥70 years) with no overt signs of metabolic or other pathologies and compared them with a cohort of 35 young healthy controls (≤40 years). Serum FGF21 levels were significantly increased in elderly indiv...

Abstract Facet joint osteoarthritis is considered a consequence of the aging process; however, there is evidence that it may be associated with degenerative changes of other structures. The goal of this study was to investigate the correlation between lumbar multifidus muscle features and facet joint osteoarthritis. This retrospective study included 160 patients who had acute or chronic low back pain and were diagnosed with facet joint osteoarthritis on computed tomography scan. Morphometric parameters, including cross-sectional area, muscle-fat index, and percentage of bilateral multifidus asymmetry at L3-L4, L4-...
