Sex-related differences in sudomotor function in healthy early twenties focused on activated sweat gland density.

Sex-related differences in sudomotor function in healthy early twenties focused on activated sweat gland density. Chin J Physiol. 2020 Jan-Feb;63(1):1-6 Authors: Park TH, Lee JB, Lee HJ, Yun B Abstract The purpose of this study was to quantitatively assess the difference in sudomotor function between healthy males and females in their early twenties by measuring skin surface area and activated sweat gland density (ASGD). The quantitative sudomotor axon reflex test (QSART), a method for evaluating autonomic nervous system activity, was used for quantification. In QSART, the sweat glands are activated directly or indirectly by the subcutaneous application of neurotransmitters, such as acetylcholine, through iontophoresis. This series of mechanisms is called the sudomotor axon reflex. After recording age, height, weight, and several measurements of the forearm, QSART was performed on 101 healthy controls aged 21-26 years to measure ASGD. The mean temperature and humidity on the measurement days were 11.4°C and 58.1% on May 3, 2018, and 14.7°C and 70.3% on May 10, 2018. The result of independent sample t-test showed higher ASGD in women (P

Authors: Tsujimura T, Inoue M Abstract Swallowing has a vital function in airway protection and is the next step after mastication. Swallowing impairment, which is known as dysphagia, is frequently accompanied by pain. Previous clinical studies have shown that orofacial pain affects swallowing function. Thus, it was hypothesized that orofacial noxious inputs may modulate swallowing function. Previous studies using anesthetized animals has proposed that the facial skin-nucleus tractus solitarii (NTS), masseter muscle-NTS, lingual muscle-NTS, and lingual muscle-paratrigeminal nucleus-NTS pathways may be involved in t...

Purpose: To evaluate the correlation between anterior chamber parameters and central corneal thickness (CCT) or peripheral corneal thickness (PCT) in patients with Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD) using anterior segment optical coherence tomography. Methods: This case–control study included 20 eyes from 20 patients with FECD and 31 eyes from 31 patients with healthy corneas. CCT was measured as an indicator of FECD severity. Anterior chamber angle parameters, including trabecular–iris angle (TIA500) and angle opening distance (AOD500), were measured as an indicator of peripheral anterior chamber ...

CONCLUSION: En bloc transurethral resection using 980 nm laser is an effective and safe treatment option for non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer. Compared to the traditional TUR-Bt procedure, the procedure using 980 nm laser has fewer perioperative complications and similar oncological results. We examined the effect of ischemic preconditioning (IPC) on changes in muscle force, activation, and the spinal reflex pathway during and after repeated sprint cycling.MethodsEight recreationally active men (high-intensity cardiorespiratory training  >  3 times per week, >  6 months) completed two exercise sessions (5 sets of 5 cycling sprints, 150% max W), preceded by either IPC (3 × 5 min leg occlusions at 220 mmHg) or SHAM (3 × 5 min at 20 mmHg). Knee extensor maximal force and rate of force were measured before (PRE), imm...

Mutations in the nuclear structural protein lamin A produce rare, tissue-specific diseases called laminopathies. The introduction of a human Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy (EDMD)-inducing mutation into the C. elegans lamin (LMN-Y59C), recapitulates many muscular dystrophy phenotypes, and correlates with hyper-sequestration of a heterochromatic array at the nuclear periphery in muscle cells. Using muscle-specific emerin Dam-ID in worms, we monitored the effects of the mutation on endogenous chromatin. An increased contact with the nuclear periphery along chromosome arms, and an enhanced release of chromosomal centers, co...

Authors: Gökaslan S, Demirbaş H, Özer Gökaslan Ç Abstract BACKGROUND/AIM: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease characterized by neurodegeneration or demyelination, and the relapsing?remitting phase of MS is characterized by acute exacerbation of disease activity. The most commonly used non-invasive approach to assess autonomic function is the determination of heart rate turbulence (HRT) and heart rate variability (HRV). The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction using HRT and HRV parameters determined via 24-hour Holter ECG monitorin...
