Effect of Physical Exercise Training in Patients With Chagas Heart Disease (From the PEACH STUDY)
Chagas disease is an infection caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, with cardiac involvement in 25-30% in the chronic phase as a result of an inflammatory process which leads to cell death, fibrosis, and cardiac remodeling 1. Recent guidelines recommend regular physical activity and structured exercise training as a complementary therapy in cardiac patients 2. However, only few studies have evaluated the effect of exercise training in patients with Chagas heart disease (HD). Considering the worst prognosis of Chagas HD when compared to other etiologies3, randomized clinical trials are needed to investigate the effects of exercise training in patients with Chagas HD.
