Point of Care Ultrasound in Detection of Brain Hemorrhage and Skull Fracture Following Pediatric Head Trauma; a Diagnostic Accuracy Study.

Conclusion: Based on our findings, emergency US can play a greater role in the initial management of head trauma children, especially as a triage test. PMID: 31875207 [PubMed]

ConclusionsRising serum SAA concentrations, in close correlation with inflammation and hemorrhagic severity, are independently related to mortality and poor outcome after ICH, indicating that serum SAA might serve as a potential prognostic biomarker for ICH.

Liyanage, Hyerim Yang, Thanthrige Thiunuwan Priyathilaka, Jehee LeeAbstractMalectin is a carbohydrate-binding lectin protein found in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). It selectivity binds to Glc2-N-glycan and is involved in a glycoprotein quality control mechanism. Even though malectin may play a role in immunity, its role in innate immunity is not fully known. In the present study, we identified and characterized the malectin gene from Hippocampus abdominalis (HaMLEC). We analyz...

CONCLUSIONS: We found that the outcomes of MT for patients with PCO were poorer than with ACO. On the other hand, MT appears to have lower rates of sICH and to increase successful recanalization. Given the high recanalization rate, MT may serve as an adjunct to standard treatment. The key point to improve outcomes is recognizing reliable factors associated with futile recanalization and optimizing the results of MT. But in view of the different characteristics of posterior circulation stroke and anterior circulation stroke, the results are far from robust. PMID: 32062629 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

AbstractStereotactic removal of intracerebral hematoma is a routine procedure for treating hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage, but the complex sequence of operations limits its adoption. We explored the application of a novel surgical technique for the removal of spontaneous intracerebral hematomas. The surgical technique based on computed tomography (CT) images was used in hematoma projection and surgical planning. Markers placed on the scalp based on an Android smartphone app allowed the installation of a stereotactic head frame to facilitate the selection of the best trajectory to the hematoma center for removing the...

AbstractTranslational genomics represents a broad field of study that combines genome and transcriptome-wide studies in humans and model systems to refine our understanding of human biology and ultimately identify new ways to treat and prevent disease. The approaches to translational genomics can be broadly grouped into two methodologies, forward and reverse genomic translation. Traditional (forward) genomic translation begins with model systems and aims at using unbiased genetic associations in these models to derive insight into biological mechanisms that may also be relevant in human disease. Reverse genomic translation...

Semin Neurol DOI: 10.1055/s-0040-1702942Reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome (RCVS) is a clinical–radiologic diagnosis that affects children and adolescents, but it is much more frequently reported in adults. Clinically, patients present with severe and commonly recurrent thunderclap headaches. Typical precipitating triggers include vasoactive substances, serotonergic agents, and the postpartum period. There may be associated neurologic complications at presentation or in the weeks following, such as convexity subarachnoid hemorrhage, stroke, cerebral edema, cervical artery dissection (CeAD), and seizures. A...

In this study, zebrafish embryos at 6 h post fertilization (hpf) were exposed to various concentrations of OTA and the phenomenon associated with intracerebral hemorrhage was observed at 72 hpf. Exposure of embryos to OTA significantly increased their hemorrhagic rate in a dose-dependent manner. Large numbers of extravagated erythrocytes were observed in the midbrain/hindbrain areas of Tg(fli-1a:EGFP; gata1:DsRed) embryos following exposure to OTA. OTA also disrupted the vascular patterning, especially the arch-shaped central arteries (CtAs), in treated embryos. Histological analysis revealed a cavity-like pattern in the...

Conclusion CAS in maintenance hemodialysis patients may be feasible and effective for the prevention of stroke with proper case selection, appropriate technique and strict perioperative management. The most common causes of death during the follow-up of maintenance hemodialysis patients were diseases other than stroke. PMID: 32062623 [PubMed - in process]
