Publication date: Available online 2 December 2019Source: Journal of Molecular StructureAuthor(s): R. Rama, S. MeenakshiAbstractA novel Aliquat 336 based functionalized ionic liquid, methyltrioctylammonium naphthylacetate ([A336]+[NAA]-) have been synthesized and characterized using IR, UV, 1H NMR and Raman spectroscopy techniques. The prepared IL was tested for antimicrobial properties and chromium (VI) extraction. Anti-bacterial test was carried out towards five types of bacteria namely Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeroginosa, Bacillus subtilis and Salmonella typhi. The antifungal test was done out towards five types of fungi Aspergillus niger; Trichopyton Spp, Penicillin, Microsporum gypseum and Candida. [A336]+[NAA]- shows inhibitory effect against all the organisms tested. Moreover, [A336]+[NAA]- was investigated for the extraction of Cr(VI) as extractant dissolved in a molecular diluent (toluene) and it provides 99.5% extraction of Cr(VI) at pH 3. Stripping of Cr(VI) from loaded ionic liquid phase was carried out using 0.5 M NaOH.
