Cholesterol content of erythrocyte membranes and elusive target

We read with great interest the recent article by Nunes and Pretorius [1] showing that individuals with type II diabetes exhibit elevated erythrocyte membrane cholesterol levels which may act as a prominent link between the diabetic state and subsequent cardiovascular complications. The study results are intriguing and elucidate further the research hypothesis of the detrimental pathophysiological role of erythrocyte membranes and especially membrane lipids in variety of cardiovascular disorders [2,3].
