Dealing with the threat of Cancer from Treatment

 I am essentially “cancer free”.  This fall will be the 10 year anniversary of my stage 3 breast cancer diagnosis. My feeling is that once we battle cancer we need to stay vigilant. Like any formidable enemy, cancer is continuing to lurk in the shadows.  I have begun to take this threat more seriously due to the loss of my father to chemotherapy related leukemia – called Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML), 10 years after he went into remission from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.    Treatment related cancers are always a threat to those victorious over the disease. In addition to AML, there is also another leukemia called Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia. Leukemia from chemotherapy to treat breast cancer is rare, but possible and one reason continued follow-up with your oncologist is necessary. I have embarked on a new preventative treatment as one way to lessen the threat of this type of leukemia. As part of my wellness journey this year, I am working with a Naturopathic Doctor and receiving intravenous Vitamin C therapy.  High doses of vitamin C are not possible orally, but intravenously, this nutrient has been studied as an adjunctive treatment for various cancers since the 1970’s. I am not reccomending this therapy for everyone and every adjunctive treatment needs to be discussed with your doctor first.  It is my belief that conventional medical treatment for breast cancer including chemotherapy and radiation is indisputable as the standard protocol.
