Pandey, Balkirat SinghAbstractBackgroundMigraine is a common neurovascular disorder affected by various levels of neurotransmitters. Low histamine metabolism is also related with pathophysiology of migraine. As diamine oxidase (DAO) gene variants are linked with higher levels of histamine in migraine patients, we investigated the possible relationship of two variants rs2052129 and rs10156191of this gene with migraine risk in North Indian population.MethodsA case-control study for 250 migraine patients and 250 matched healthy controls was conducted by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP).ResultsWe found statistically significant differences in allelic frequencies of rs2052129 (p = .009, OR = 1.462; 95% CI: 1.098–1.947) and rs10156191 (p = .019, OR = 1.430; 95% CI: 1.060–1.928) variants in DAO gene. For rs1015691, we were able to show statistically significant association at all genotypic, dominant and allelic levels in both MA (for T allele, p = .020; OR = 1.662, 95% CI: 1.083–2.551) as well as in female subgroup (for T allele, p = .025, OR = 1.460; 95% CI: 1.049–2.033). But no such significant association was found in clinical sub grouping of migraine in rs2052129 as p > .05. However in gender analysis, protective effect...

Abstract Objective: Primary headache and obesity are highly prevalent disorders in the general population. Although many studies have reported an association between the two, there is still no overall comprehension about this relationship. To gain a more accurate understanding in this regard, we analyzed data from a 2011 cross-sectional study in Chongqing, China. Methods: Patients with a chief complaint of headache were administered a headache questionnaire and diagnosed by neurology doctors in accordance with the International Classification of Headache Disorders 2nd Edition (ICHD-II) criteria. Patients aged

This study reported a case of maxillary aspergillosis with a complete headache and eye pain after tooth extraction with a large abscess in the relative jaw. Tenderness in the right temporal, lower jaw numbness and right eye proptosis was found. Histopathological examination was the suggestion of maxillary sinusitis with a fungal ball of aspergillus. CONCLUSIONS: In this review, biological and chemical knowledge of melatonin, its experimental effects, and the clinical impact on patients with neurological disorders were described. According to all of the beneficial results obtained from experimental and clinical trials, melatonin may have a prophylactic and therapeutic effect on neurological diseases. Strong collaboration between neurologists and health service policy makers is needed to encourage use of melatonin in the patients suffering from neurological diseases. Melatonin may be the solution we have been looking for. PMID: 31718830 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

AbstractThe global prevalence of migraine as a primary headache has been estimated as 14.4% in both sexes. Migraine headache has been ranked as the highest contributor to disability in under 50  years old population in the world. Extensive research has been conducted in order to clarify the pathological mechanisms of migraine. Although uncertainties remains, it has been indicated that vascular dysfunction, cortical spreading depression (CSD), activation of the trigeminovascular pathway, pro-inflammatory and oxidative state may play a putative role in migraine pain generation. Knowledge about pathophysiological mecha...

AbstractPurpose of ReviewThe purpose of this review is to provide a summary of the perioperative studies that have examined transdermal lidocaine (lidocaine patch) as an analgesic and put the evidence in context of the likely overall benefit of transdermal lidocaine in the perioperative period.Recent FindingsSeveral randomized controlled trials have been published in the past 4 years that concluded transdermal lidocaine can reduce acute pain associated with laparoscopic trocar or cannula insertion.SummaryTransdermal lidocaine may reduce short-term pain after surgery in selected surgery types and has a low risk of toxicity ...

AbstractPurpose of ReviewScientists have reported that pain is always created by the brain. This may not be entirely true. Pain is not only a sensory experience, but also can be associated with emotional, cognitive, and social components. The heart is considered the source of emotions, desire, and wisdom. Therefore, the aim of this article was to review the available evidence about the role of the heart in pain modulation.Recent FindingsDr. Armour, in 1991, discovered that the heart has its “little brain” or “intrinsic cardiac nervous system.” This “heart brain” is composed of approximat...

CONCLUSIONS: The case highlights the need to broaden the formulated differential diagnosis of an acute onset severe holocranial headache and pay careful attention to other signs and symptoms that may provide hints on potential mechanism(s) for secondary headaches. We provide justification for the need to incorporate "Headache attributed to Methemoglobinemia" as a subtype under the section "Headache attributed to hypoxia and/or hypercapnia" of the International Classification of Headache Disorders to support clinical decision making.
