Authors: Damaskos C, Garmpis N, Kollia P, Mitsiopoulos G, Barlampa D, Drosos A, Patsouras A, Gravvanis N, Antoniou V, Litos A, Diamantis E Abstract The globalization of the Western lifestyle has resulted in a dramatic increase of diabetes mellitus, a complex, multifactorial disease. Diabetes mellitus is a condition often associated with disorders of the cardiovascular system. It is well established that three quarters of diabetics, aged over 40, will die from cardiovascular disease and are more likely than non-diabetics to die from their first cardiovascular event. Therefore, risk stratification is necessary to ind...

AbstractPurpose of ReviewAs the prevalence of diabetes mellitus grows worldwide, it is increasingly important to understand the commonly comorbid urologic conditions, hypogonadism and erectile dysfunction, in the setting of the diabetic man. The relationship between the diabetes, hypogonadism, and erectile dysfunction is complex with significant interplay among the disease processes and potential for unique management of the triad. The purpose of this review is to provide an update on the intertwined nature of these diseases in diabetics with special consideration for pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management.Recent Findi...

Abstract Low-intensity extracorporeal shockwave therapy (LiESWT) represents a promising treatment for patients with erectile dysfunction (ED). We investigated the efficacy of LiESWT combined with tadalafil 5 mg once daily in men with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and ED and compared LiESWT protocols administering different number of shockwaves. We performed a retrospective matched-pair comparison using data from a prospectively maintained database. Seventy-eight patients who received tadalafil 5 mg once daily for 12 weeks + LiESWT performed with an electrohydraulic source for 3 weeks (Group A) were matched 1:1 t...

Authors: Hylmarova S, Stechova K, Pavlinkova G, Peknicova J, Macek M, Kvapil M Abstract Little is known about type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) impact on the male sexual and reproductive functions. We aim to evaluate the influence of T1DM on male sexual function, quality of sexual life, and sex hormone levels. A total of 57 male patients aged 18 to 50 years (mean = 33) with T1DM (duration mean = 15 years) had a medical examination and completed a set of questionnaires - International Index of Erectile Function-5 (IIEF-5), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Sexual quality of life questionnaire male (SQoL-M). The prev...

Abstract Penile prosthesis implantation is the gold standard of surgical therapy for patients with medication-refractory erectile dysfunction. However, this umbrella definition includes significant heterogeneity and associated risk profiles that should be candidly discussed and addressed perioperatively. Factors associated with operative success and patient satisfaction are often surgery specific; however, risk profiling via patient selection, preoperative optimization, proper device selection, and intraoperative consideration are highly correlated. Some examples of common risk profiles include comorbidity(ies) su...

In this study, we investigated the effects of Eucommia ulmoides Oliv. leaf extract (EULE) on restoring erectile function in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats model. After 16 weeks of treatment, EULE administration had significantly increased intracavernosal pressure, nitric oxide (NO) levels, and cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) concentrations. Serum superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) levels were markedly higher and serum malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were lower in the EULE-treated groups than in the diabetic model group. EULE restored NO biosynthesis by significantly increasing pro...
