Serum levels of polychlorinated biphenyls and risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma: A hospital-based case-control study.

This study examined the relationship between PCB serum levels and risk of NHL in a Northern Italy area (Brescia province), where a chemical factory produced PCBs from 1938 to 1984, causing human contamination. A case-control study of 215 NHL patients and 215 control subjects was conducted. Cases and controls were assayed for serum levels of 33 PCB congeners. No associations were found between risk of NHL and serum levels of total PCBs (OR = 0.51; 95% CI: 0.25-1.04 for highest vs lowest quartile) or specific PCB congeners. The study confirmed a strong association of NHL with HCV infection (OR = 3.60; 95% CI: 1.30-10.02). This case-control study does not support the hypothesis of an association between current serum levels of PCBs and NHL development in the general population. PMID: 31561313 [PubMed - in process]

Cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) is a non-Hodgkin lymphoma characterized by infiltrating malignant monoclonal T-lymphocytes. Differential diagnosis of CTCL poses a challenge to clinicians due to its propensity to mimic benign dermatoses such as psoriasis and eczema. Meiosis-specific cancer/testis (meiCT) antigens are a specialized group of genes expressed specifically in meiosis and epigenetically silenced in normal somatic cells, however recent research has demonstrated that a number of meiosis genes are ectopically upregulated in cancers, including CTCL.

The objective is, therefore, to examine the relation between co-morbid CVD at cancer diagnosis and HRQoL among cancer survivors diagnosed with colorectal, thyroid, prostate, endometrium, ovarian cancer, melanoma, (non-)Hodgkin lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), or multiple myeloma (MM) in an exploratory population-based cross-sectional study. Material and methods: Analyses were performed on combined data sets from the PROFILES and Netherlands Cancer Registry (NCR). Data on co-morbid CVD at cancer diagnosis was extracted from the NCR. HRQoL was measured via PROFILES at a median of 4.6 years after cancer di...

CONCLUSION: While immunotherapy cannot be unequivocally incriminated in primary central nervous system lymphoma, this case raises many questions about the imputability of immunotherapy in the occurrence of secondary cancers, including lymphomas. PMID: 31122751 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Conclusions: CAR T cell therapies have demonstrated the clinical benefits of harnessing our body's own defenses to combat tumor cells. Similar research is being conducted on lesser known modifications and gene-modified immune cells, which we highlight in this review. Introduction Chimeric antigen receptors and engineered T cell receptors (based on previously identified high affinity T cell receptors) function by redirecting T cells to a predefined tumor-specific (or tumor-associated) target. Most of these modifications use retroviral or lentiviral vectors to integrate the construct, and most of the receptors ...

CONCLUSIONS: Both cancer incidence and mortality are remarkably increased after heart transplantation, with the relative incidence most elevated for SCC, lip and other oral cancers, and for NHL. PMID: 30821595 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

S, Reinertsen KV Abstract BACKGROUND: Chronic fatigue (CF) is scarcely explored among young adult cancer survivors (YACSs), and more knowledge is needed to develop targeted interventions for YACSs with CF. The present study aimed to investigate the prevalence of CF and associated factors in YACSs. Also, the change of fatigue with time was explored. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The present cross-sectional study is part of a nation-wide population based survey of Norwegian survivors of cancer in childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood (The NOR-CAYACS study).YACSs diagnosed at the age of 19-39 years with breast can...

This study aimed to explore whether a correlation exists between the incidence and mortality of cancers and normalized internet search volumes on the big data platform, Baidu. We also assessed whether the distribution of people who searched for specific types of cancer differed by gender. Finally, we determined whether there were regional disparities among people who searched the Web for cancer-related information. Methods: Standard Boolean operators were used to choose search terms for each type of cancer. Spearman’s correlation analysis was used to explore correlations among monthly search index values for each can...

Dewayne Anthony Lee Johnson has always just gone by Lee. He lived a modest life for 42 years, and was devastated when he was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2014. Now 46, as he struggles with his advancing illness, Johnson has found sudden celebrity with a historic victory over one of the world’s most powerful and controversial corporations – Monsanto Co. Johnson sued Monsanto alleging that he developed a deadly form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma after being drenched with the company’s herbicides, which he sprayed as part of his job as school groundskeeper. In Aug. 2018, a jury in San Francisco unanimously f...
