Rationale: Pulmonary tuberculosis and lung adenocarcinoma are highly prevalent pulmonary diseases associated with high mortality. However, the coexistence of lung cancer and pulmonary tuberculosis is rare. Further, the morphological features of lung cancer with coexisting pulmonary tuberculosis are similar to that of lung cancer without pulmonary tuberculosis, even though the lesion is predominantly cavity. For these reasons, the diagnosis in patients with coexisting lung cancer and pulmonary tuberculosis could be delayed until the advanced stage, and therefore, prognosis in these patients is worse compared with that of ...

Abstract Overexpression of Sonic hedgehog (Shh) is associated with progression of several cancers. The expression of Shh in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has been reported with inconsistent results. Lung adenocarcinoma (LAC) and lung squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) are two major subtypes of NSCLC, which have different genetic genotypes and clinical therapeutic options. The expression of Shh in specimen of patients with NSCLC has yet to be comprehensively determined according to histological subtypes. Shh expression level was determined in 167 NSCLC patients (56 LAC patients and 111 LSCC patients) by immunohist...

1322Objectives: To examine whether the texture analysis of dual-time-point (DTP) F-18-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG)-PET/CT images can differentiate between 18F-FDG-avid benign and malignant pulmonary lesions. Methods: The enrolled 59 patients underwent DTP 18F-FDG-PET/CT for characterization of a lung nodule. SUV-related (SUVmax and SUVmean), volumetric [metabolic tumor volume (MTV) and total lesion glycolysis (TLG)] and texture parameters [entropy, homogeneity, dissimilarity, intensity variability (IV), size-zone variability (SZV) and zone percentage (ZP)] were obtained. The pathological findings were the standards of refe...

Conclusions: 18F-FDG PET/CT imaging can accurately guide the biopsy of lung masses, especially in the cases with pulmonary consolidation. For patients with pulmonary masses and uncertain pathology after bronchoscopy and CT-guided percutaneous lung biopsy, 18F-FDG PET/CT imaging can be used to determine the biopsy site. Key words: 18F-deoxyglucose, PET/CT, pulmonary mass, biopsy

In addition to their antimicrobial activities, they possess other functions; e.g., cell activation, proliferation, regulation of cytokine/chemokine production, migration, diffe...

Conclusion The elucidation of the function of circRNAs is an emerging field of science with a tremendous potential after previously being dismissed as RNA artifacts. They are ubiquitously expressed and thousands of members have already been identified. This fact only expands their potential to possibly enhance our knowledge to understand the difference between health and disease. Owing to their structure stability and their presence in exosomes circRNAs may also exert their function in an autocrine, paracrine and possible endocrine fashion. In addition, the fact that circRNAs are widely distributed in the cellular compart...

Background: Within the EU, Portugal remains one of the countries with the highest tuberculosis (TB) prevalence. Although rare, the association of lung cancer (LC) and TB has been documented and is poorly understood. Objectives: Characterize and evaluate the subset of patients with active TB and LC in Lisbon’s greater area. Methods: Retrospective study of patients with TB and previous or current LC diagnosis referred to Lisbon’s TB Centre between 2012-2017. Data was collected from clinical records and national TB registry forms. Results: From a total of 1995 patients with active TB, 1.1% had a diagnosis of LC. Comp...

We retrospectively evaluated 1004 patients diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis in our hospital between the years 2013-2017. Simultaneous cases of lung cancer and TB were reviewed in terms of age, sex, type of cancer, treatment, and stage of disease.Thirty-six patients with pulmonary tuberculosis and lung cancer associated with 1004 patients were studied.Of 36 patients, 35 were males. Mean age was 61.Concomitant malignancy was detected; 3 as small cell carsinoma, 9 as adenocarcinoma, 23 as squamouscell carsinoma and 1 as non-small cell lung carcinoma.Twenty-eight cases of tuberculosis were diagnosed as sputum ARB positivi...

CONCLUSION: The proportion of primary bronchopulmonary cancers diagnosed among non-smokers is increasing in Dakar. An analytical study of suspected risk factors would be helpful for prevention. PMID: 30413327 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
