The maternal and paternal effects on clinical and surgical definitions of osteoarthritis

ConclusionOA in the mother increased the risk of surgical and clinical definitions of hip, knee and hand OA in the offspring and particularly in daughters. Our findings imply that heredity of OA may be linked to maternal genes and/or maternal ‐specific factors such as the fetal environment. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Authors: Lacorda JB, Jung HG, Im JM Abstract The supramalleolar osteotomy is a joint-preserving surgical procedure. It is a very good treatment option for the asymmetric varus ankle and medial compartment osteoarthritis. The primary objective of the procedure is to shift medial concentration of stress toward the lateral intact articular cartilage to redistribute the joint loads during ambulation. Several studies have shown that deformities of the ankle result in uneven load distribution in the ankle joint, which eventually leads to articular cartilage degeneration. Since the lateral articular cartilage is intact, j...

ConclusionPatients with and without chondrocalcinosis have the same outcome after total knee arthroplasty related to pain, functionality, complications, arthritis and revision after surgery for end-stage osteoarthritis. Chondrocalcinosis is not a contraindication for total knee arthroplasty and additional synovectomy is unnecessary.Level of evidenceIII.

Authors: Muñoz-García N, Cordero-Ampuero J, Madero-Jarabo R Abstract Aims: The aim of this study is to analyze the diagnostic value of weight-bearing radiographs, magnetic resonance images (MRI), and the combination of both in osteoarthritic knees when using arthroscopic findings as the "gold standard" to compare with. Methods: A total of 59 patients were studied because of chronic pain in 1 of their knees. Radiographs were classified according to Kellgren-Lawrence scale. Magnetic resonance images were classified according to Vallotton, and arthroscopic findings according to Outerbridge ...

We reviewed patients diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis at our academic center from 2016 to 2017. This retrospective cohort study was approved by the institutional review board in Ruijin Hospital. The primary outcome measure was pain on movement measured by a 100-cm visual analog scale. The secondary outcome measures included the Western Ontario and McMaster University Osteoarthritis Index, range of motion, and adverse effects. Statistical analysis was performed using Statistical ...
