Variation of microbial load and biochemical activity of ready-to-eat salads in Cyprus as affected by vegetable type, season, and producer. However, in the past few years these products have been linked with outbreaks of salmonellosis and listeriosis; thus the continuous investigation of their safety is an essential requirement. A total of 216 samples of ready-to-eat salads from the Cypriot market were analysed to determine the microbiological quality and safety, along with physicochemical attributes of the salads and identify possible correlations between them. The samples were randomly collected from four retail outlets and correspond to five different salad producing companies. Furthermore, the effects of season, salad producer and type of salad and/or their interactions with the tested parameters were investigated. The results revealed that the higher microbial load among seasons was observed in samples collected during spring. Escherichia coli was found in 11.57% of samples and 2.62% of isolates were found to be able to produce extended spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL). In this study we characterized the very first transcriptional and posttranscriptional regulators of the LEE in this emerging pathogen. Our results suggest that Ler and GrlA globally activate transcription from the LEE, whereas GrlR negatively regulates the LEE. Additionally, we demonstrate that the RNA chaperone Hfq posttranscriptionally represses the LEE by specifically targeting the 5’ UTR of grlR. In summary, our findings provide the very first glimpse of the regulatory landscape of the LEE in E. albertii – a bacterium that has been implicated in multiple diarrheal outbreaks worldwide.

ConclusionsWe think that the most appropriate antibiotic to be chosen for the outpatients for empirical treatment in all age groups in our region, is as oral nitrofurantoin and parenteral amikacin. Also the appropriate parenteral antibiotics that should be selected for the empirical treatment of inpatients UTI in all age groups are the TZP, amikacin and carbapenems.

ConclusionsST10 is considered a high-risk clone worldwide. This type of mcr-1-harboring clone is a major concern for human and animal health and must be under close surveillance.In this work we detected the presence of mcr-1 for the first time in our country, albeit in an allodemic manner, associated with different antibiotic resistance genes and from diverse clinical contexts.Considering that colistin is often the last therapeutic option available for multidrug-resistant Gram-Negative Bacilli infections, it is necessary to maximize precautions to avoid the dissemination of isolates carrying mcr-1.
