Identifying indoor air Penicillium species: a challenge for allergic patients.

CONCLUSION: Complete coherence between MALDI-TOF MS and sequence-based identification was found for P. chrysogenum, P. expansum, P. glabrum, Penicillium italicum and Penicillium corylophilum. The main drawback was observed for Penicillium crustosum, which included 21 strains (7.6 %) that could not be identified using MALDI-TOF MS. PMID: 30990400 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Introduction: Asthma is one of the most common diseases in the world, in the last decades its prevalence has increased. Many studies have shown that excessive body weight and a high sodium intake increase the risk of asthma symptoms in children. Although the importance of diet on respiratory sensitivity is evident, the eating habits of patients with asthma are not commonly investigated in clinical practice.

ConclusionsAnxiety, depression and asthma control (specially patient-rated asthma control) were important independent predictors of asthma HRQoL, and all of them should therefore be considered in interventions to improve HRQoL in asthmatic patients.

Authors: Pai-Dhungat A Abstract When a patient presents with wheezing, pulmonary embolism is not usually considered as a possible cause. However bronchoconstriction can be caused by the embolism which produces wheezing that may be so obvious to make a diagnosis of bronchial asthma. Here we present a case of sub-massive pulmonary embolism presenting predominantly with wheezing without any previous history of cardio pulmonary diseases. The patient was treated for acute severe asthma in the beginning later suspected to have pulmonary embolism because of poor response to therapy and was confirmed by appropriate investi...

Authors: Zampogna E, Centis R, Negri S, Fiore E, Cherubino F, Pignatti P, Heffler E, Canonica GW, Sotgiu G, Saderi L, Migliori GB, Spanevello A, Visca D Abstract BACKGROUND: Pulmonary Rehabilitation (PR) is a multimodal treatment that is still poorly investigated in severe asthma where respiratory symptoms remain 'uncontrolled' despite intensive pharmacological therapy. Bronchiectasis and obstructive sleep apnoea (OSAS) are common comorbidities which may worsen asthma control. AIM: Aim of the present study is to investigate the effectiveness of PR on functional exercise, dyspnoea, and muscle fatigue in patients...

Authors: Gali B, Eyawo O, Hull MW, Samji H, Zhang W, Sereda P, Lima VD, McGrail K, Montaner JSG, Hogg RS, Moore D, COAST Study Team Abstract Objective: To characterize the incidence of select chronic comorbidities in the era of modern (pre-integrase inhibitor) highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in British Columbia, Canada. Methods: We used data from the Comparative Outcomes And Service Utilization Trends (COAST) study, a population-based cohort study of people living with HIV (PLWH), to determine incidence rates of six key chronic diseases among PLWH receiving HAART in BC from 2000 to 2012. The selected d...

The objective measurement of the cough severity and the assessment of the pattern of nocturnal coughing could be useful in the treatment of respiratory diseases in children.Study designIn children with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)-induced acute bronchiolitis, coughs were recorded using our original system with a microphone and accelerometer, and analyzed using our customized software program. The number of coughs in every 30-minute interval was measured in patients with acute bronchiolitis (n = 20), and their results were compared with those of infants with asthma exacerbation (n = 16).ResultsThe cough count in childr...
