In vitro antibacterial effects of silver nanoparticles synthesized using Verbena officinalis leaf extract on Yersinia ruckeri, Vibrio cholera and Listeria monocytogenes.

Conclusion: The results clearly indicated that V. officinalis AgNPs have potential antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. PMID: 30873268 [PubMed]

CONCLUSIONS: This study provides evidence of a dynamic process of white matter change occurring beyond the initial phases of recovery after moderate to severe TBI. The observed relationship between structural reorganization and changes in cognitive performance has implications for rehabilitation potential in more chronic phases of recovery. Authors: Kim TJ, Song J, Kim YS, Huh J, Kang IS, Yang JH, Jun TG Abstract OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate the outcome of tricuspid valve repair (TVR) performed concomitantly with pulmonary valve replacement in repaired tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) patients. DESIGN: This retrospective study included all patients who underwent pulmonary vale replacement from 2000 to 2016 after TOF correction. TVR patient data were compared to those of patients who underwent pulmonary vale replacement alone. RESULTS: Thirty-eight patients were enrolled. The degree of tricuspid regurgitation was significantly decreased after o...

Abstract Mitochondria are crucial for neuronal cell survival and death through their functions in ATP production and the intrinsic pathway of apoptosis. Mitochondrial dysfunction is considered to play a central role in several serious human diseases, including neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease and ischemic neurodegeneration. The aim of the present study was to investigate the impact of transient global brain ischemia on the expression of selected proteins involved in mitochondrial dynamics and mitochondria‚ÄĎassociated membranes. The main foci of interest were the proteins mit...

CONCLUSIONS: It is known that CE can miss clinically relevant and serious lesions. Our results suggest that patients with an initially negative or inconclusive CE frequently have a cause of SB bleeding detected on repeat CE. The DY of repeat CE is highest in those with bleeding on their initial CE (83.3%) and lower in those with initially normal examinations (45.8%) or when an alternative cause, such as angioectasia is seen (14.2%). We report a patient who presented with abdominal distension and had raised tumor markers. A computed tomography scan revealed a calcified cystic lesion of the bladder dome together with features of PMP. These findings were confirmed at laparotomy, and cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy was performed. Histologically, the urachal lesion was a low-grade urachal mucinous tumor (mucinous cystic tumor of low malignant potential). The peritoneal disease was associated with ovarian involvement and omental cake and was designated low-grade mucinous carcinoma peritonei on histology. The immunoprofil...

Purpose of review Community-acquired bacterial meningitis continues to occur and be associated with significant morbidity and mortality despite the availability of effective conjugate vaccines for the three most important meningeal pathogens. Recent findings Indications for cranial imaging in suspected bacterial meningitis varies significantly between guidelines. Cranial imaging is of no clinical utility in those patients without indications and fosters delays in performing a lumbar puncture. Delaying lumbar puncture is associated with increased costs in both adults and children with meningitis and previous antibiotic...
