Changing landscape of the treatment of hyperparathyroidism related to end-stage renal disease —can we turn the clock backward?

End-stage renal disease (ESRD) is often complicated by hyperparathyroidism (HPT), leading to high serum levels of parathyroid hormone (PTH), calcium, and phosphate. HPT related to ESRD is associated with an increased risk of (cardiovascular) mortality, mineral and bone disorders, and clinical features such as abdominal pain, fatigue, and forgetfulness. These debilitating symptoms, in addition to the burden of chronic renal failure and its treatment, often lead to a decreased quality of life (QoL).
