Exercise and survival after a cancer diagnosis: The evidence so far

For more than ten years now, evidence from observational studies has been accumulating indicating a protective effect of physical activity and exercise on survival (reduced cancer-specific and all-cause mortality) following a diagnosis of cancer. The initial study by Holmes and colleagues in 2005 in women with stage I-III breast cancer from the Nurses ’ Health Study has been followed up in patients with a range of cancers that includes breast cancer, colon and colorectal cancer, recurrent malignant glioma, and prostate cancer.
