Stroke doubles dementia risk, concludes large-scale study

(University of Exeter) The study analyzed data on stroke and dementia risk from 3.2 million people across the world. The link between stroke and dementia persisted even after taking into account other dementia risk factors such as blood pressure, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Their findings give the strongest evidence to date that having a stroke significantly increases the risk of dementia.

CONCLUSIONS: Vascular risk factors and sociodemographic characteristics were the best predictors of cognitive outcomes in a sample of late-onset epilepsy with cerebral small-vessel disease. Epilepsy did not show influence on cognitive function. Longitudinal studies are necessary to clarify the relationship between vascular risk factors and epilepsy on progression of cognitive deterioration in patients with late-onset epilepsy. In this study we show, for the first time, significant alterations in cholesterol efflux capacity in adolescents throughout the range of BMI, a relationship between six circulating adipocyte-derived EVs microRNAs targeting ABCA1 and cholesterol efflux capacity, and in vitro alterations of cholesterol efflux in macrophages exposed to visceral adipose tissue adipocyte-derived EVs acquired from human subjects. This study set out to determine the prevalence of abnormal carotid ultrasound findings and their association with cognitive function among the adults ≥60 years in Wakiso district, Uganda in 2018. In this study, we identify a link between members of the genus Veillonella and exercise performance. We observed an increase in Veillonella relative abundance in marathon runners postmarathon and isolated a strain of Veillonella atypica from stool samples. Inoculation of this strain into mice significantly increased exhaustive treadmill run time.
