Comparison of liver function tests abnormality – using two distinct parenteral nutrition (PN) lipid emulsions

Rationale: An important side effect of PN is liver function tests (LFT) abnormalities. In recent years, new PN solutions are marketed. There is lack of direct comparison between the newer and older solutions. In our hospital, up to July 2014 an MCT/LCT (ML) (Lipofundin) containing solution was prescribed, thereafter a transition was made to an LCT/MCT/Omega-9/Omega-3 (SMOF-Kabiven) (SMOF) containing solution. The aim of this study is to compare the occurrence of LFT abnormalities between the two lipid formulations.
