The Heart-Brain Continuum: A New Way of Looking at Heart Failure Therapy
The heart and the brain are inextricably linked by bi-directional neural pathways that modulate neuro-cardiac reflexes, a common dependence and sensitivity to the vicissitudes of vascular flow and pressures and a shared susceptibility to the pathologic effects of aging and atherosclerosis. It would therefore seem axiomatic that heart failure (HF), a disease that disproportionally affects the aged, alters the homeostasis of the vasculature and activates neural network signaling would have significant effects on the patho-biology of the brain.
