Molecular characterization of group A rotavirus in sewage effluent from Nigeria
Background: Rotavirus is a major causative agent of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) among children worldwide. Outbreaks of rotavirus can occur through transmission from water bodies as a result of contamination with sewage. Studies have shown that environmental surveillance can serve as an early warning system and an effective means of identifying prevalent and emergent rotavirus strains. The aim of this study is to characterize rotavirus strains from sewage effluent in some locations in Nigeria.
