Histological improvement of NAFLD in patients with obesity after bariatric surgery based on standardized NAS (NAFLD activity score)

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is considered to be the hepatic manifestation of the metabolic syndrome with liver steatosis as the unifying liver lesion [1]. While steatosis hepatis solely presents a largely benign condition, NAFLD can progress to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), liver cirrhosis, liver failure, and hepatocellular carcinoma. With a global increase of its underlying risk factors such as obesity, hyperlipidemia and type II diabetes (T2DM), NAFLD nowadays affects up to 35% of the adults in the United States and has become the most common cause of elevated liver enzymes in industrialized countries [2].
