The Japanese diet has been widely expected to have health benefits that have contributed to the longevity of the Japanese population [1 –3]. Previous studies have reported that the Japanese dietary pattern is associated with a lower risk of mortality or adverse health outcomes (e.g. disability, dementia, and depression) [4–9].
