Prognostic effect of renal function in ambulatory patients with HFrEF: the kidney is a marker of cardiac function

Conclusion Time-varying kidney function is not independently related to poor prognosis in HF. Rather than directly affecting survival, renal impairment is probably a surrogate marker of HF severity. Teaser Renal impairment has been considered a negative prognostic factor in heart failure (HF). The evidence comes from studies investigating the role of baseline kidney function (KF) or comparing KF and worsening renal function at different time points. We studied the impact of KF on long term prognosis of ambulatory HF patients, taking into account its time-varying effect. We found an association between poorer KF over time and impaired survival that was explained by markers of HF severity.
