BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation spectrum - an update on mutation distribution in a large cancer genetics clinic in Norway.
Conclusions: The spectrum of BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations in the carrier population at Norway's largest cancer genetics clinic is diverse, and with a weaker founder effect than previously described. As a consequence, retesting the families that previously have been tested with specific tests/founder mutation tests should be a prioritised strategy to find more mutation positive families and possibly prevent cancer in healthy relatives. ConclusionThe prescription of compression garments for lymphoedema is highly varied and may be due to lack of underpinning evidence to inform treatment.
AbstractBackgroundSurgical procedure for breast cancer is not without its side effects and one such side effect is axillary web syndrome (AWS), characterized by palpable fibrotic-like cords in the operated arm. As physical evaluation is the only gold standard method used, our study aims to assess the incidence and early detection of AWS with a self-assessment questionnaire.MethodsFrom July 2013 to July 2014, 370 breast cancer patients were enrolled. AWS incidence was 51.1%, with 94.1% onset in the first 4 weeks after surgery; 43.5% of the patients did not recover in the first 8 weeks. Univariate analysis showed that BMI (P

Conclusion: TRAM flap reconstruction after mastectomy is an appropriate way to improve the patient’s postoperative physical appearance. The results of this study indicated that TRAM flap reconstruction after mastectomy is safe, with an acceptably low number of complications and can be performed by a single surgeon in conjunction with a mastectomy procedure; furthermore, the majority of patients were satisfied with their reconstructed breast. Authors: Lokejareonlarb S, Chamalerk P Abstract Background: Latissimus Dorsi flap (LD flap) has been used since the eighteenth century to cover large chest wall defects after total mastectomy and is thought to be superior to split thickness skin graft in terms of both cosmetic results and functionality. The outcomes and complications resulting from the use of LD flap reconstruction for large breast cancer are not well documented in Thailand. Objective: To describe a technique using the Latissimus Dorsi musculocutaneous flap for breast reconstruction. The outcomes, complications and length of stay after operatio...
Authors: Laohavinij S, Paul V, Maneenil K Abstract Background: Prognostic factors for survival of metastatic breast cancer (MBC) patients are important for identifying risks and deciding on patient treatment; however, few studies of prognostic factors in MBC have been performed in Thailand. Objective: To determine the survival duration and prognostic factors for overall survival in metastatic breast cancer. Material and Method: This retrospective cohort study was conducted by reviewing 232 files of MBC patients treated in the Oncology Unit, Department of Medicine, Rajavithi Hospital from January 1st 2005 to...
Authors: Marinovich ML, Macaskill P, Bernardi D, Houssami N Abstract Introduction Tomosynthesis is proposed to improve breast cancer assessment and staging as a complementary role to its detection capability. We examine the accuracy of tomosynthesis in measuring tumor size relative to pathology and compared with other tests. Areas covered A systematic literature search identified studies of tomosynthesis in estimating the size of newly-diagnosed breast cancers. Descriptive analyses were performed due to heterogeneity in patients, technology and methods between studies. Eight studies were eligible (678 patients). Me...
Conclusion In the current analysis residual disease in simultaneous additional excisions was associated with an increased risk for IBTR despite negative final margin status. This should be considered in the overall therapeutic concept.
Conclusion These results indicate that icariin is likely to be a candidate for bone-related disease treatment and that icariin provides insights into the molecular mechanisms that influence RANKL-induced osteoclast differentiation. Graphical abstract
