Opioid withdrawal and takotsubo syndrome: how can we study further the underpinnings of their connection?
I read with interest the contribution by Olson et al, published in the Journal,1 about the 66 year-old woman who suffered takotsubo syndrome (TTS), following withdrawal of her maintenance oxycodone therapy (30 to 60 mg/day) for her rheumatoid arthritis, and I concur with the authors that health care professionals should exercise a high index of suspicion, “given the prevalence of opiate use both recreational and iatrogenic (80% of world's consumption of the opiate analgesics supply” in the United States.
