Serum Vitamin D Deficiency and Risk of Hospitalization for Heart Failure: Prospective Results from the Moli-sani Study

Evidence indicates that Vitamin D deficiency may be associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease, however findings on risk of heart failure (HF) are controversial. We investigated the relationship between serum Vitamin D and the incidence of hospitalization for HF in a large prospective cohort of Italian adults.

Vitamin D deficiency (25(OH)D) is a common finding in patients with congestive heart failure (HF) [1]. Vitamin D might play a role in the pathogenesis of HF [1 –4], with mechanisms for this possibly including effects on the renin–angiotensin system, insulin secretion and sensitivity, protection against angiogenesis and reduction of the pro-inflammatory response in HF [5–7]. However, a recent vitamin D supplementation trial did not find a beneficial e ffect on parameters of renin-angiotensin system in patient with advance HF [8].

Conclusion: Our study showed that vitamin D deficiency has a significant impact in heart failure patients; it is an independent predictor of lack of midterm clinical response and long-term mortality in patients undergoing CRT. Abstract Atrial fibrillation is a common type of arrhythmia and is an important cause of stroke and heart failure. vitamin D is an emerging risk factor of AF, and is implicated in the pathophysiology of atrial fibrillation. It has been established that this vitamin is extensively involved in the regulation of both the renin angiotensin aldosterone system and the immune system. Epidemiological studies have not yet reached a consensus on the possible association between vitamin D deficiency and atrial fibrillation. Better research designs and methods can further clarify the relationship between the two.
