Augmenix scores reimbursement code for SpaceOar

Augmenix said today it won a category 1 current procedural terminology reimbursement code from the American Medical Association for periprostatic implantation of biodegradable material, covering its flagship SpaceOAR device. The SpaceOar is designed to separate the prostate from the rectal wall during radiation treatment for prostate cancer, Augmenix said. The device is delivered through a small needle as a liquid, which then solidifies into a soft gel that expands the space between the prostate and rectum during radiotherapy. The substance then liquefies and is absorbed and cleared from the body in the patient’s urine, Augmenix said. “This is an important reimbursement milestone for providers who offer this new treatment option to prostate cancer patients. The Category I CPT code will facilitate reimbursement with US government payers and commercial health insurance companies to enable wider access to the innovative SpaceOAR technology,” CEO John Pedersen said in a prepared statement. The reimbursement win was supported by the American Society for Radiation Oncology and the American Urological Association, the company said. The CPT code is expected to become effective on January 1, 2018, replacing the device type’s current category 3 code, the company said. “SpaceOAR is clearly the most elegant and clinically proven technology for reducing rectal toxicity in the treatment of prostate cancer developed in the past 20 years. I consid...

Authors: He Q, Chen K, Ye R, Dai N, Guo P, Wang L Abstract Ovarian cancer (OC) is the fifth most frequent cause of cancer-associated mortality worldwide, and is accompanied by asymptomatic progression. Sirtuins (SIRTs) are a family of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide-dependent protein deacetylases, comprising seven members (SIRT1, SIRT2, SIRT3, SIRT4, SIRT5, SIRT6 and SIRT7). Accumulating evidence has demonstrated that SIRTs act as prognostic estimators in certain types of cancer such as lung cancer, prostate cancer, gastric cancer, breast cancer and colorectal cancer. However, it remains unknown whether individua...

SpaceOAR© hydrogel rectal dose reduction prediction model: a decision support tool. J Appl Clin Med Phys. 2020 Apr 06;: Authors: Paetkau O, Gagne IM, Alexander A Abstract Prostate cancer external beam radiation therapy can result in toxicity due to organ at risk (OAR) dose, potentially impairing quality of life. A polyethylene glycol-based spacer, SpaceOAR© hydrogel (SOH), implanted between prostate gland and rectum may significantly reduce dose received by the rectum and hence risk of rectal toxicity. SOH implant is not equally effective in all patients. Determining patients in which the im...

Purpose: Late gastrointestinal (GI) toxicity after radiotherapy for prostate cancer may have significant impact on the cancer survivor's quality of life. To date, little is known about local dose-effects after modern radiotherapy including hypofractionation. In the current study we related the local spatial distribution of radiation dose in the rectum to late patient-reported gastrointestinal (GI) toxicities for conventionally fractionated (CF) and hypofractionated (HF) modern radiotherapy in the randomized HYPRO trial.Material and Methods: Patients treated to 78 Gy in 2 Gy fractions (n = 298) or 64.6 Gy in 3.4 Gy fraction...

ConclusionThe results of this study showed that there are some differences in term of protein content between the normal and cancerous lung tissues. Further studies are needed to evaluate these proteins that investigate whether these proteins can candidate as biomarkers to use in the early diagnosis of patients with NSCLC.

Abstract The critical roles of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in the regulation of diverse biological functions has potentiated them as cancer biomarkers. Among these transcripts is the prostate cancer associated transcript 1 (PCAT1) which has been initially shown to exert oncogenic roles in prostate cancer. Further studies revealed its similar roles in various kinds of human malignancies including both solid tumors and hematological malignancies. Animal studies have shown that down-regulation of this lncRNA can attenuate tumor growth in a wide array of cancers including prostate cancer, colorectal cancer, squamou...

Purpose: To perform a multi-institutional analysis of patients with synchronous prostate and rectosigmoid cancers.Materials and Methods: A retrospective review of Duke University and Durham Veterans Affairs Medical Center records was performed for men with both prostate and rectosigmoid adenocarcinomas from 1988 to 2017. Synchronous presentation was defined as symptoms, diagnosis, or treatment of both cancers within 12 months of each other. The primary study endpoint was overall survival. Univariate and multivariable Cox regression was performed. Results: Among 31,883 men with prostate cancer, 330 (1%) also had rectosigmoid...
