Niedobór żelaza bez niedokrwistości u dzieci: aktualny stan wiedzy

Publication date: Available online 26 October 2015 Source:Pediatria Polska Author(s): Anna Chmielewska, Radosław Dryl Iron deficiency is the world's most prevalent single-nutrient deficiency, ranging from non-anemic iron deficiency (NAID) to iron deficiency anemia (IDA). Children are one of the high-risk groups for both conditions. While diagnosis and treatment of IDA is a well-established practice, there are no recommendations concerning NAID. In this article, the current knowledge on iron deficiency has been summarized, particularly its influence on child development. MEDLINE and Cochrane Library have been searched up to July 2015 with special emphasis on studies published within the last 5 years. The negative influence of early life IDA on developmental outcomes has been well documented. There are data suggesting this association for NAID as well. Prophylaxis is recommended in children, with special emphasis on high-risk groups. There is a need for further clinical trials that will help establish treatment recommendations for NAID and its influence on development.
