Site of inflammatory bowel disease crucial

(Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute) A groundbreaking study of more than 30,000 patients with inflammatory bowel disease has shown that genetic factors affect the location of the inflammation in the gut, with important implications for diagnosis and treatment of patients.The largest study of its kind, this research uncovered a genetic similarity between Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, suggesting they form a continuum of subtypes in the bowel. That genetic information could be used to inform treatment and reveal misdiagnoses.
