An Inevitable Challenge in Primary Prevention of Upper Gastrointestinal Bleeding Among Aspirin Users: Appropriate Use of Proton Pump Inhibitors

Li et al1 conducted a retrospective observational study using the Nationwide Emergency Department Sample, demonstrating an increased incidence of upper gastrointestinal bleeding among patients on long-term aspirin therapy without cardiovascular disease. Considering the rising incidence, severity, and costs associated with upper gastrointestinal bleeding among patients using aspirin for primary cardiovascular prevention, the authors conclude that there is a need for cautious discussion beyond current guidelines regarding the indications for aspirin use.
